Hello fellas. Sorry to interrupt, but I need some help.
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Stihl's "super", or "pro" models versus models with nothing but 036, 034, etc? And is it worth extra money to get?

The 034 super is the same bore as a 036. Pro has an adjustable oiler and decompression valve.

034 AV (Non Super) - 46mm bore with adj oiler, no decomp valve
034 Super/036/MS360 - 48mm bore with adj oiler, no decomp valve
036 Pro/MS360/MS360 Pro - 48mm bore with adj oiler, w/decomp valve

To my knowledge all 034's and 036's came with adj oilers. There are also other differences in carbs, mufflers, handlebars, air filters, etc amongs the models.

024 AV - 42mm bore, non adj oiler, no decomp valve
024 Super - 42mm bore but same stroke as an 026/MS260, non adj oiler, no decomp valve
026/MS260 - 44mm or 44.7mm bore, non adj oiler, no decomp valve
026 Pro, MS260 Pro - 44mm or 44.7mm bore, adj oiler, w/decomp valve

There are also other differences in carbs, mufflers, handlebars, air filters, etc amongst the models.

Stihl gurus.........

Thanks guys!...A lot more difference than I thought. I envy your knowledge.
So, if I understand this correctly, an 036 jug on an 034 would make it at least part of a "super"?

Yes that is correct. There are some differences, but an 034 Super and an 036 have the same displacement.

I've yet to see an 034 super in the last year and a half, we get plenty in the shop but they're never supers. As for 260's I think it's ridiculous that a $450 saw has a non adjustable oiler, and the 260 doesn't need the deco valve that the pro has. What I'm constantly pitching a fit to our stihl reps is about the 290/310 saws not having a deco valve. They need one! I find a 441 easier to start than a 290. I think the 390 finally got one, now put one on the rest of that series.

MS290 needs a decomp button, yes yes yes...

Yes, the 390 now has a decomp button on it. The 290 does not, and I can attest that it is hard on the wrist if you are forgetful that you are pulling on a cord that will snap back hard and fast if you are not paying FULL ATTENTION to it and have a very firm grip. Read: Owe! :chainsaw:

next to 250's we sell more 290's than anything else (though i've converted quite a few ppl to 280's instead of 290/310) and the only response i ever get from anyone at our stihl dist. is that a deco valve means a selling price of at least $50 higher. UGH!!!! We haven't stocked anything like the 390 sine the first round of 039's so if they want a 390 i try and upsell a 361 in stock unless i have a wholegoods order going out that day or the next.

I guess I'm the opposite of you. I don't think an 260 pro needs an adjustable oiler at all. The advantage of the adj oiler to me isn't the ability for it to be adjusted, since I've never seen a non adj 260/026 oiler produce an inadequate amount of oil. What is nice about the ones equipped with an adj oiler, is that the oiler is only pumping when the clutch is engaged. Most 50cc saws are only equipped with bar lengths that range from 16" to 20" bars (except maybe the guys out west). The non adj oiler produces plenty of oil for a 20" bar in all conditions and its about equivalent to the adj oiler set to max.

Brad, you now officially rival SawTroll as an encyclopedia of chainsaw knowledge. A large stone trophy will be sent to you, FedEx overnight, collect. :yoyo:

Does Decomp make it a "pro"

I just picked up 2 saws one is MS360 and the other is a MS360C, they both have decomp valves, does it make them both "pro" saws?

One had a pro sticker on it, the other did not.

Are the bearings seals, etc the same on a stihl "pro" saw as a non "pro" saw?

heres my 034super, i love the saw. i did a mild port and muffler mod and its an animal dragn a 20" chain
