you know there is the obvious answer to this question..the 440 is built much better and has more power. but your post motivated me to do some real world trials. i bought a 20" bar for the 440 and the 390 already has a 20"....both are beasts. i love the 390 also. made me smile

correct me if im wrong but isnt the 390 a clamshell which would cost as much as a new saw for a p/c?? they dont even make them aftermarket that i know of or am i just on crack???

Yes the 390 is a "clamshell"
I was able to clean up the bore and replace piston and ring.After carb rebuild and careful cleaning and breakin,she turned out nice!
Found new owner on ebay then turned to the 044.
After BB top end,new tank,recoil and plastic,I kept this one!!

The 044 was one of the best saws Stihl ever made. Sell the 390 and redo the 044.
