It's the first day of the New Year and I just returned from walking a 60 acre woodlot that a neighbor owns close to my place. When I say close, I mean I can throw a rock from my roadside mailbox and hit his log landing. He had this piece selectively cut a few years back and I had spoke to him a few days ago about using the old log landing on his property for storing and processing wood for my firewood sales since I have little space on my small parcel of land. I was only looking for a spot to bring my own wood to, so that I could split, stack, and store it until I could get it sold in the spring.
After explaining my intentions and offering to pay for the use of his land by either a set sum per year or supplying him with firewood if he preferred, he told me this. " I probably have 80 to 120 cords of wood here that is not mill quality and should be cut. You would be doing me a favor if you cut it and take it out of here as I want to get more light in to the better quality trees and I don't have time to do the work myself." He even told me to use my best judgment as to what I cut and to top it all off, the only thing he asked for in return is for me to cut him four cords of wood a year for his personal use but he told me he's all set for this year all-ready. And like they say on television, BUT WAIT-THERES MORE. There is also a network of decent wood
roads going all through this piece for access. I am still pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming. I lost a great job a couple years ago due to a plant closing and the past two years have not been easy, but I am feeling truly blessed today.
