just killed the 2nd OEM coil on my ms261 :-(

gotta say the stihl coils must definately have an issue, either that or iam the unluckiest stihl user around.

fortinately i had a chinese copy in the gear bag to get me out of trouble,
thinking i will stick with the 20 buck specials for now.

That is strange, I'm on my second 261 and no coil issues.

I reckon it's strange as well. Both scenarios shut saw down fine from previous use day before and next day dead as a dodo!

No. Not on either of them. And the sessions I used them on before they died were pretty light.
Must be a voltage problem......those grey imports run on 110v and the ridge dodge ones here on 240v . .... how's that sound?

Seriously though, did you put in a new plug and check the wiring before installing this new coil? Sounds like somethings making the coil blow.

Just confirming my suspicions and double checked my fault analysis book. Pre ignition either spark plug with too low a heat range or fuel with too lower octane rating

I found out a little more today Ben.

Chain was totally blunt, bar shows heaps of wear, rod is blue !

Sounds more like operator error, too lean, and just too damned hot.
At a guess the earth electrode possibly started to glow, then detonation and a nice hole melted through the piston.

Larry is amazed Stihl have honoured warranty.

Changes everything doesn't it. Perhaps the operator read up on some of the ''expert advise'' on forums like this one.
One just needs to scroll down the list,,,,, My bar oil is so good I turn it right down and save a fortune..... or '' I use such and such oil with the fuel @ ?? to 1 and tune my engine with a tack to ?????? rpms and it goes like a rocket. Oh forgot,,,, the chain sharpening experts who just can't wait to show their skills like they are just one of the few who can.
Penny pinching leads to things like the pic above (just one example). Then they have the hide to take their F't up saw back to the dealer and cry so the dealer may organise the warranty to fix it free.

This dealer copped two holed pistons, same model saw in the one week !

He rang me yesterday morning wondering if I'd spoken to Ben and filled me in on the extra/missing info, he's just waiting on big ends ATM.

Larry said at least in this case he's young and seems to hear/be able to be told.

That's good Rick if the young fella listens, hopefully that's the end of it. Seems odd, 2 saws in a week.

On a different note,,,,, congratulations to Jason (postrip) winning a QLD racing title yesterday. May there be many more with a few Australian titles thrown in as well in the future.

Thanks Neil, as you know I've been working extremely hard in and out of the arena!
I drew some decent billets yesterday, and cut them clean & quick.
I enjoy the racing and socialising afterwards equally as much.
Time now to make some more adjustments, and hopefully a little practice here n there, before our next events!image.jpgimage.jpg

Congrats Jason, you had a great race there and did everything right, like Neil said, the first of many to come

Thanks Will, I have yourself along with a couple of other good fellows pointing me in the right direction!
I certainly enjoyed the whole day, and I'm extremely happy with my progress so far.
The next event I appear at, I should be a little fitter as well
