Ax

The wedge doesn't do much without the ax. In the woods were I live and once made my living cuttin logs, a timber faller never was without a good (sharp) ax.

Some of the above are great, but I have found a few times where the best thing I have brought is Wasp and Hornet Spray. Those ground dwellers are nasty!!! Nice small addition that has help a few times.

I call it Spray and Run. Last week, I was offered the job of stomping around in the units ahead of the cutters and rigging crew, and they would even give me a container of gas or diesel to throw on any yellow critters that came my way. I turned down the offer. It sounded way too much fun...not.

Goodness. This is the PNW where we do espresso (snooty) coffees. Snooty is my home made double shot mocha that I carry in my lavender Thermos. I believe you call it a flask? Non snooty is instant coffee. I only use it for backpacking trips and emergencies. Snooty coffee from a coffee place can cost you $3.00 so I make it myself. They do a great frappe down the road though.

Shoulda guessed.

BTW being of Italian parentage, espresso is what we call "cafe normale" and everything else is powdered carboard. At home I have an espresso machine and two grinders that cost about double the price of a big CS. A couple of years ago I also qualified as a barista judge but haven't been quite so much into that scene as much lately, milling is definitely more fun

You're way more into it. I merely have a cheap Mr. Coffee 12 year old espresso maker and I will admit to adding chocolate because, I don't like the taste of coffee! It is the battle of the Mormon genes vs the Scandihoovian genes. A mean combination. A coworker nicknamed it snooty coffee because it is expensive when compared to Western Family (already ground in the can) coffee. I carry instant with me because I'm afraid if I get marooned in the woods with the guys, I and they might turn into extremely cranky people without caffeine. I've seen what can happen when the chew and the cigarettes run out, and it isn't pretty.

I have several milk crates, nothing better has come along.

May not be better, but I like 5-gallon buckets with those tool pouches on them. Outside pockets hold screnches, wedges, files and such; everything else inside. Plus they make a good seat. Of course,I'm always near the truck.

When I am clearing
my kubota l3130 set up with pallet forks on front landscape rake on back.
modded golf cart to carry all of the below
skidding tongs
20' of chain
372 with 32" bar
257 with 24" bar
rancher 55 with 20" - migth run it with 16" this year
2.5 gallons of mix
gallon of bar oil
helmet, chaps, steel toe red wings, gloves, long sleeve shirt even if it is 90 degrees ( i hate poison oak)
cell phone
small tool box with chain files, bar wrenches for both saws, crescent, file guide, 1 extra chain for each if I throw the chain and bugger it, misc small tools
couple wedges- the plastic ones.
small splitting maul - easier to hit wedges in
medium axe
3lb hand maul

Cutting log piles
Pretty much same as above with the following changes
372 with 24" bar about 60% of the time
257 with 20" - just for playing- 5% of the time
rancher 55 with 16" bar about 35% of the time usually mid day when I start getting tired.
Tractor with pallet forks to pick up big logs, 72" bucket to scoop up all the rounds to move them to round pile.

I only buck up enough doug fir in a day to fill a 6 X 10 X 3 trailer so I dont need as much fuel/oil as you guys but here's what I do take:

1. first aid kit that stays in my truck
2. da mighty ms361
3. a gallon or so of fuel mixed
4. got an old valvoline quart bottle I keep filled with chain oil
5. spare chain and spark plug
6. file and guide
7. scrench, small stihl oil pump screwdriver and a leatherman
8. an old pair of mx goggles (they fit over my glasses and lenses are cheap)
9. ear muffs and gloves
10. 3 1/2lb axe
11. shovel and fire extinguisher
12. water and a sandwich

I think thats it, I wear steel toe boots and always have my cell. I cary the small stuff in a 16" craftsman tool bag I got on closeout for $9.00 and the rest in a tool box on the trailer.
