I either have the wrong size file or dont know what I am doing.
Maybe both:eek2:

Have always sharpened my chains completely free hand. Cutter and rakers.
Got a Stihl MS310 some time back.
Had a Stihl dealer put a new chain on it.
Ask for a file to sharpen it with and he handed me a 3/16 file.
It seemed to small the first time I used it.

The chain is a 33RS66. I think that is the Stihl part number for the chain.

Is the 3/16 file the proper size to sharpen this chain.

Thanks
David

The guy screwed up. A 13/64 is recommended by stihl and a 7/32 is given by others for 3/8 chisel chain.

The 3/16 is smaller than the 13/64, so it would be tough to argue that this is the suitable file size, even if this is this guys anecdotal favorite or whatever.

HOOK is right Sam.

Looking around the WWW and found this part number.

5605 - 007 - 1029. Just checking to see if this is a 13/64 Stihl filing kit??

Thanks

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for all the advice.
13/64 prooved to be a bit hard to walk up on.
So, I stopped at Lowes and picked up a 7/32 file, file guide and a raker file and guide.

Will try it out this weekend if the Bushhogging dont last to long.

It works good if the first sharpening is done with 7/32 and also hit the bottom of the link too with it. Then after that use the 13/64, until the teeth start to break off.
