Wood ID please! Couple types.

If you could give us an end grain shot of solid wood on #2, it would easily settle whether it's shag or white oak.

Leaf looks like immature red maple leaf, as does trunk shots of #1.
 
#1 looks like Tree of Heaven. The leaf isn't a Tree of Heaven leaf though. Unless the leaf was actually on the tree when you found it, I'd say the leaf is from a different tree. More of a weed than a tree.

#2 Shagbark hickory
 
Red maple leaves, both mature and young. The lobes increase as it grows.

a woodsman at work told me that #2 was almost certainly white oak, based on the smell, and he thought the other was a maple.
 
well I thought I had it narrowed down pretty good, but a source online has red maple with opposing twigs, not alternate, like tree#1 has, so back to the guessing board.

I can't wait until my 10x magnifying glass comes in. I'll have a little better idea then.
