This is cherry. Makes me wonder how many people know what they are burning....

Nothing like the cherry we have.


My guess is Birch and Hickory.

the bark can very a lot , with the lower trunk looking like the bark in my picture above, and the top branches of the same tree having smooth bark like the picture below from the OP's first post

plus with how heavy the OP says it is(red maple/soft maple is much lighter than the harder hardwoods), and the picture of the meat:

..im surprised more people didnt say cherry for that first chunk. im actually changing my guess from red/soft maple to a piece from a top branch from a black cherry tree, im with WV on this now, the color of that fresh cut meat of the wood screams \top branch of a cherry tree to me, if the OP knew what cherry smelled like he could clear up our guesses in a second, no mistaking the smell of cherry
