The 036 diffs

Got a chance to buy some nice 036's a couple of months ago... Had a chance to get an ms360 too but passed as I'm not a huge flippy cap fan on the small ones. I have other 036 but wanted a nice one to put up. But had to buy 2 since they were so nice Prob should have bought all 3 but oh well. Anyway just wanted to throw some pics up as well as observations. First off know the compression was aprox 155-160 on both. Thats about where the similarities stoped. Case and recoil is same of course but plastics, carbs, filters, muffler, and some other lil stuff is diff. I ran them in some wood when I first got them and the old 036 stomped the 36 pro. Heck my 034 was faster than the 036 even with the carb adjusted. Took them home and found the muffler on the older 36 had the extra port. So I modded the pro's muffler cliped the carb stop for the H jet and then they ran pretty much side by side. The old one might have just a slight edge but its really close now. I decided to put the pro up since its a little more rare. I am going to post some pics of the diffs. But just wanted to let you all know about how much better the non epa 036 ran. I kinda thought the 36pro that goes on ebay for so much would be a little stronger out of the box. It does have a much better filter setup tho. I believe the HP rating did drop toward the end of the 036 years due to this. It just felt like a much larger drop than was stated.

PS Good looking saws you got there.

Odd. My 036 PRO handily stomps the 036's at work. Compression is ~150 PSI for all 4 saws.

you prob have your 036 tuned in a little better.. Do you have the stock exhaust? and have you removed your limiter.. You might be a better filer too.

That orange fuel cap is for an 029/039, cornfusing since it fits many of the Stihl models. Nice saws!

LOL you noticed that... I do believe that is the only thing I like about them.. It is going back on another 036 and getting the black cap for storage. I love the little bump on it.. Never need a scrench again. I have 5 or 6 029-39 carcases and thats all I ever use off them.. I do have a wash pro saw ported 039 cylinder I might throw on one eventually I just really don't like them saws.

They are neat caps, just made for the 029/039 and don't look right on any other models imo. A WHS 039 cylinder? I'd put a 029 together with it and smoke a few 361s.

The last time I ran my PRO against the 036's at work, they were all 100% stock. I have since hogged out the exhaust, smoothed and widened intake/exhaust ports, and am planning to add an extra port and widen the transfers. Today it ALMOST cuts with a stock 044.

Hmm, I can already hear the "PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN" challenge. I think I may have a project for the weekend (stock 044 at work for comparison -- I'll just have to take off the DP cover I put on it to keep things even).

I love my old style 036. its a good darn tank. I helped it out some too. Dis a muffler mod on it with a husky deflector. Tuned it up and put a stack on it. It loves too pull a 28" B&C full skip RSC chain. Even pulls a 32"B&C with ease. slapped a 3/4 wrap, deep side cover, dual 4-point dawgs. Its a PNW I guess.

That is the one I use on my 1991 036. This is the older model air filter. You CANNOT take the screws out. The filter is actually 2 halves with part #'s being
1125-120-1615 and 1125-120-1620. Again...you CANNOT remove the screws.
It is sold as a total package...both "sides" and includes both screws.
They sell on e-bay for about $15 and shipping. $25 or so at my dealer.
Check your filter to see about the screws!! Newer saws came with removable screws. Those filters sell for a little less. Anyways, before you buy off e-bay, make sure you are buying what you need as far as the screws are concerned. I make importance of this cuz the screws cost like $4.80 ea. if I remember right.
If you are going to a dealer...just take the filter to match-up.

That's the problem, I don't have the filter to take to the dealer so I can get a new one. The saw I'm working was a few saws made into one.

If you don't have the filter ....why would you state you need the one on the right?? Not being aggressive....just confused????

Because I have the one on the left. I got used from another 036. It doesn't fit so that is why I need the number from the other filter on the right to order it. Make sense?

I guess totally my error...I thought filter mounting were the same except for the screws being removable or not. You're at the dealers hand now.
Just got to see for yourself that new filter fits properly.
Maybe carb off a different model....??? Pieced together....who knows????

As promised-ish, here's video of my ported 036 PRO vs a stock 044. They're both sporting new Stihl full-comp round semi-chisel chain because that was all I could find that was new.

Looked like the 044 was slightly faster. If you had put more pressure on the 036 I think it could have went a little faster.
I am almost always impressed how well 034 and 036's run stock or muf modded, never run 1 ported.

Yeah, by my count the 036 was behind by ~ 1 sec on all three cuts. I'll do this test again once I have the new P/C done. This stuff is pretty fun!

By the by, I didn't really put much pressure at all on either saw -- just enough to keep it straight in the cut.

Yea when I was testing my 36's it was in 28" wood with 25" bar. Same bar just swaped it back and forth. I need to borrow my daughters camera one day so I can get some vids.. Neither of my digital cameras have sound. I hate watching vids without sound. It is a little hard to compare an 036 to a 44 in wood that small. Both saws have great top end its the torque where the 044 does well. I bet in wood around 14" its the same or the 36 starts getting faster.

Thanks for doing that comparison madhatte, your saws run real nice. I just did a port job on a 036 PRO and made a statement that it would likely run with a stock 044, I have 4 044`s but none are stock so I did not have one to compare it to. Don`t think I was too far off. Your 2 saws were real close but it does come down to a stopwatch to say for sure.

Great vid man. I love the 036's. With a mild woods port, dual port muff mod. They scream pretty good. Wish you could have posted a thread on your porting of the 036. That would have been awesome.
