Well with all the hype about aftermarket parts lately ,what are everyones thoughts on the aftermarket crankshafts ? seems like if can save a couple bucks what the heck . Anyone have any long term success with them ? Hows the sprocket bearing end holding up ? Have you had any rod bearing failures ?

I used an AM crank to repair a loggers MS660, he usually gets a year from his saws, but the big end bearing went at six months. We put an aftermarket crank in it, and it lasted 8 months more. The failure was the big end bearing again but by that time the rest of the saw was junk anyhow. ;)

The AM crank that comes with the NWP 390 shortblock looks better than the OEM crank. Machined lobes vs casted on the OEM, nicely polished. I'm not a metallurgist so I really can't give an accurate comparison to the quality of the materials, and I've never used one in any of my own saws so I can't say how they hold up. But for what it's worth, it looked real good.

So you're saying the OEM crank lasted 6 months and the aftermarket lasted 8?

I'm running a aftermarket crank in a MS 250 and it was used alot this summer

Just have to wait and see how long it last this 250 has alot of work done to the cylinder also :msp_wink:

Sorry if my post was misconstrued, I meant that I saw a blurry picture of one in 1994 and it looked blurry. I wouldn't put my name on something blurry.

They may have improved in the last 20 years, but I won't know for sure until my free one gets here.

:D
