top handled saw use

After a discussion with a colleague i decided to post a thread on this subject 'top handled saws are designed to be used one handed'...I often read criticism on here when a poster post's a pic of himself useing a top handled saw one handed,i'm saying aren't they designed to be used either 2 handed or single handed ????..I personaly dont know any climber who doe's not use a top handled saw single handed

Rolla,I agree with you.They are designed for two handed use but are built so that you are able to use one handed if need be,Thats why he HSE wants to outlaw them.

This used to be a topic that came up every six months. Now it's coming up every other week. Isn't there anything NEW to talk about?

It's been said countless times before, but I'll say it again. If you one hand the saw, the brake will not engage in the event of kickback. I'm not saying I've never done it, but OSHA frowns on such practices.

I thought it was a centrifuge type brake? :alien:


edit - I meant inertia!

I don't know what that is.

The actual chainbrake is heavier, and the weight snaps it back and engages the CB.

That's how it works on most of my saws. Seems the Husky's engage easier than the Stihl's, but I'm not entirely certain. That's how I perceive it.

Please everybody lets not get on this topic again. A couple of weeks ago, being new to the forum I asked "what is wrong with one-handing?" I do it constantly but I guess the saw could kickback and cut your head off. If you want to hear all the pros-cons search the archive.

The chain brake is activated by INERTIA, hence its name, INERTIA chain break. The weight of the black thing is what activates the break due to Newtons law, an object at rest stays at rest.

Holding a 1 handed saw with 2 hands seems weird. Plus it doesnt give you the same leverage that a regular saw gives you, due to the fact that the handles are closer together. I think that in some situations 2 handing an MS200 all the time can impractical.

1 handing a 044 or similar saw is normally foolish, you cant control it, the MS200T on the other hand... its made like that for a reason.

Of course we could all be men and make our own decisions and use a little thing called COMMON SENSE and RESPOSIBILITY (for your actions). And yes, this gets too much posting on here, IMO.

I one hand my 200 on 90 percent of the cuts i make. I guess that makes me a hack

No, no, I'm sure the word was inertia.

The inertia brake is not 100% The handle hitting your wrist as the saw comes back is. I've seen a couple guys who would have gotten nasty cuts, when a saw kicked back while flushing a stump, where your hand is usually on the side part of the wrap handle. fortunately they were wearing chaps, so they didn't get cut, but in that case the inertia brake did not operate. Other than that, I've expounded on my opinon on this subject at great lengths in other threads, so I'll refrain from further comment.

I say just hold on to the danged saw.

What we post and what we do are two very different things. When we can get two hands on the saw..........we do it!


If not, it is one-handed.............need I say more.......not!!!

i only got cut once .. real bad . ...from a 1.5 inch dia.limb [ darn mimosa ],,, tiny thing under slight tension... yep one handed saw ... use a 346 xp youll save time ,with the power ,in the long run ....plus youll have 2 hands on the saw ..... unless u r like me ... i run a 272 one handed .... but youll need strong arms .......... haha jus kiddin bout the 272 .... really i say one handed saws are awesome but simply dangerous ... i threw my 338 an 335s away crap anyway ...how bout the exauast hahaha ...and plug cover [ joke] and 009's has been scraped along time ago .... my guys climb with a 346xp or no climb .... they got power and 2 hands on the saw ..... they just have to figure out the positioning ..... my 2 cents dark
