A couple years ago I acquired a slab of Koa wood. After much consideration, I decided to make a live-edge coffee table. To support the top (46" long and 18" - 26" wide x 2.5" thick) I made two sets of finger-jointed panels. My plan was to carve Koa leaves in the panels. Well, this past October I finally dove in and began carving. The panels and base are cherry. I also decided to carve only the larger leaves and some seed pods to simplify the work (Cherry is not the easiest wood to carve) and made mirror images of the leaves on opposing panels. I routed the background to about 3/8" deep. Finally finished carving a couple nights ago and applied a couple coats of Danish Oil. When that was driy I put on a few coats of satin poly. First two photos show the table and panels before carving. Next shows a panel in the initial stages, then the completed panels and finally the finished panels assembled to the table. This is my wife's Christmas present.
