My current "big" saws are a Husqvarna 372XP, 575XP, and Stihl 460. I had an 066 for a while that I got rid of, and have regretted it since. I've just come across a deal on a 390XP, which will require trading out of the 575 + cash. The plan is to run a 32" bar, but I'm curious how much of a difference I'll see with it vs a Stihl 460 running a 28" bar.

Is the 390XP a big upgrade over the 460?

I think so for that length bar, it should be closer to the 066 with a 32” bar. The 390 has some intangibles over a 460 that go beyond the power as well. The 390 is a smoother saw to run and it’s not particularly close, and it filters air better. Not having to knock out that filter is awesome.

I’d do it if your dealers for Husqvarna are good, and I’d guess they are since you have a 372 and 575.

Honestly, there's more Stihl support....but I'm not too concerned about that.

I run 32 on both my 460 and 372. If the plan is to run a 32 just put it on either saw and get cutting. [emoji1303]

My 385xp is a beast after cutting ten cords to break it in. I can’t imagine what a 390xp is like. At 88cc’s it has to be a total animal.

The port timing can vary enough with some stihl models that one guy runs a ringer while the other guy runs a turd... there will be no meeting in the middle for them when it comes to comparing opinions.
Don't turn down a good deal on a 390 by thinking a 460 is that close.

I think there is more of a difference than the numbers show. But if you want to compare it in stock form to your 066, it is noticeably smoother, but slightly less powerful (torquey).

It is also one of those weight vs increased performance things, but if you are going to be burying a 32" or a 36", I imagine the 390 will show its colors quite nicely over the 460.

The 390 is THE 32" felling saw. It's awesome and closer to a hybrid of Stihl and Husky features than most Huskies. A ported one will beat out a 660.

But you won't see much difference running short bars. And once you get to 36" you want to port or bumb up to 95cc range.

I find the 460 far less inspiring. Chainsaw Jim has it right. Some are good, some just slog through wood. If you already have a 372, go 390 or 395.

Would jump on trading your 575xp plus cash for a 390. Better saw and you don’t have to worry about the clutch side bearing like you do with the 575. Your 70cc heavy anyway.

........ Here's how the test stack up.

I think your spec sheet differs from what Husquvarna claims on their website now.
390
Equivalent vibration level (ahv, eq) front handle
3.5 m/s²
Equivalent vibration level (ahv, eq) rear handle
6.2 m/s²

Torque, max.
4.7 Nm

Power output
6.5 hp
Maximum power speed
9600 rpm

Can't go wrong with either one -- but just BUY THE 390XP

I've felled over 200 lodge pole pines with my 390XP -- all between 9,000 to 10,000 feet of elevation. Most were 30"+ DBH. Bar sizes are typically 24"/28"/32". Bucking smaller logs with a 20" bar is waaaay fun. Love that saw.

I just run the 394 and don.t worry about the right saw choice . Had it for every got a 298 never did nothing to keep it running . You will be in beast mode when you run a 298 . This saw is all hard nature . I run some Sthil saws about 1981 they were like a new pick up A big bunch of whips . To start if your so frail to need a tail gate help not sure what that's all about . I got a sthil to run from work I pulled the cord and noththing happen . At 58 years old I always run in beast mode.
