Convert small electric splitter to gas?

I suppose someone, somewhere would even find this appealing: :laughing:

Castrol Hydraulic oil for log splitter

This is not taking into consideration the two stages of a splitter pump. A 16 GPM pump is 16 GPM on the high volume/low pressure side but when it kicks into the low volume/high pressure side it is only running about 3 GPM.

Castrol Hydraulic oil for log splitter

Lots of folks have had good luck with the honda clones from Harbor Freight as another option. Also, look around, tons of running engines on broken lawn mowers and such for short dollars.

Castrol Hydraulic oil for log splitter

16 GPM pump needs a 8HP gas at a min. (assuming that you will be running standard spitter pressures)

Castrol Hydraulic oil for log splitter

AWS 32 weight is pretty much the standard for hydro juice in splitters, especially ones that will be used in a variety of temps.

Convert small electric splitter to gas?

Too many unique parts on those things to try and retrofit. Pump direct couples to the motor, even the hydro lines are unique to the machine, so the pump has to be "exactly" in the proper position. I think it would be pretty maddening to try.

    Splitter got slow?!?

That would fall under the "bypass" suggestion above. The valve not only directs the fluid in one direction or the other (or pass through), but in most all splitters it is the location of the relief valve, as well. Funky valves can cause weird results.

    Splitter got slow?!?

Couple of things to check... As said above - fluid level. Flow - is the pump staying in the low volume/high pressure side? Restriction - is the line feeding the pump collapsing? Bypass - is the pressure relief or cylinder seals bypassing fluid (this should be very noticeable with lack of...

    Hydraulic Log Splitter-concept question

Request a new video as the one linked above no worky, worky.

    Making smoker chips/chunks

Right or wrong, I use chips on the grill (think burgers or chops) and chunks on the smoker when low and slow is what is needed.

Nicely done. I like the unique slide setup for the pusher.

    DHT splitter modified

I want to go back to the beam deflection for a minute. With a no load lift causing that much deflection (Yes, I am taking into consideration them problem you have with the control of speed) - if you drop a 250 log on that dude - even at a low speed lift - it appears that you may turn that beam...

Dirty Hand Tools Customer Service Excellent

Got a chance to actually get my grubby mitts on a DHT splitter last weekend. Solid product - and with customer service that has been reported to be outstanding this company should have a bright future.

my new to me toy :)

I would have to believe that there is a hydro circuit for the back pusher blade. If that blade is not needed it could be re-purposed. Just an observation.

Wood splitter done for now....have bugs to work out

As other stated, the only real way to know system pressure is with a pressure gauge. You can do like Kevin suggested or you could put the "T" at the input to the hydro cylinder (push side). A properly running 16hp should pull the 28 GPM pump. Theoretically it only needs 14HP for rated...

Self propelled splitter build --update August 15 with video

If I may make one suggestion...put some angle braces on the backside of your pusher. Its just a matter of time before those corners get rolled backwards.

Whew! I was on the edge of my seat till I saw this. I should have known better.

    Your first post

Flawless. And has not been altered in any way. I simply don't have anything I would change on the machine with ONE exception...if the pump ever goes, its getting a 28GPM pump and a bigger engine.

Showing off my home built splitter. The thread is so old that it didn't retain pictures through the years and even some of the posts are gone. http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/my-home-built-splitter.34697/
