    Homelite Old Blue SXL year?

Homelite switched from blue to red paint on the Super XLs sometime in the early 1970's, so I think it would be a 1971, rather than a 1981. The Homelite-Terry saws may also use a different serial number code, but I'm not sure.

    Stihl 041 AV won’t “accelerate”

I agree with Cuinrearview, seems like the brake is engaged or maybe the chain is too tight. Another possible cause is the clutch may be slipping, or not staying engaged (isolater clutch styles).

    Homelite Super XL Auto question

It's been a little while since I decoded a Homelite serial number, looks like I forgot exactly how and got it wrong. But that chart has refreshed my memory, and it would have been made on the 4th day (January 4th) of 1979, #184 made that day.

    Homelite Super XL Auto question

Welcome to Arboristsite. Glad to hear you got the saw running. By the serial number, this saw was made on the 4th day of 1979 (January 4th), #184 made that day. Here is an owner's manual for the Super XL Automatic: https://www.manualslib.com/products/Homelite-Super-Xl-Ao-3821287.html The oiler...

    056AV oiler trouble

Sounds like it isn't the vent or adjustment then. To further diagnose this, you could remove the pump from the saw and put some oil in the pump intake hole. Then turn the pump's plastic gear and see if it pumps. If it doesn't, then remove that gear. Spin the gear that the worm gear is supposed...

    056AV oiler trouble

The oil tank vent might be stopped up. I believe it's located on the back of the oil tank, under the intake boot. Also, is the oil pump adjusted all the way to maximum flow?

    john deere model 30

The model 30 was manufactured for John Deere by Echo (Kioritz corporation). I believe it is the same as an Echo CS-302, except for the brand name and color. More info on the CS-302 can be found here...

homelite XL-103 jug on an SXL?

I thought about using an XL-100 series cylinder on my Super XL, but the magneto/ignition mounting bosses are in different places between the two cylinders. The muffler bolt holes also appear to be in slightly different locations.

    Stihl 032av chain tensioner

Yes, I believe so. Never taken any out personally but from pictures and my saw that's what it looks like. You can probably use the two bar nuts to remove the stud.

    Stihl 032av chain tensioner

I think the bar plate is held on by a shoulder on the bar mount studs on 031's and 032's.

New (to me) chainsaw: 1977 STIHL 031 AV

The guard seems to rest about at the angle shown in my photos, not exactly vertical but not very close to horizontal either. A pair of lugs made into the guard seem to stop any further forward movement. It moves freely backward, all the way to the handlebar, and a spring pushes it back until the...

New (to me) chainsaw: 1977 STIHL 031 AV

Thanks for the information. This saw does have two white plastic plugs in the flywheel, with a screw in the middle of each one. I didn't know the points could be accessed through them, without removing the flywheel. That's a very clever design. Thanks for telling me.

New (to me) chainsaw: 1977 STIHL 031 AV

It's entirely possible the cover was replaced at some point in time. I think the cover on it now has a (77) date wheel, so it's at least period correct. I did notice the slot for the brake rod in the hand guard, but I thought the guard on brake equipped saws pivoted forward more.

New (to me) chainsaw: 1977 STIHL 031 AV

Thanks. Yes, it is missing just about everything for the chain brake. I don't think this saw was factory equipped with a brake, just a hand guard. I looked into it some, and I think for the brake to work I would need a brake equipped clutch cover, an isolater clutch, and a different hand guard...

New (to me) chainsaw: 1977 STIHL 031 AV

Here are some pictures: Overall, it's in pretty good condition for the age. Looks like it wasn't used a whole lot. Handlebar wrap needs repair. The logo. Probably my favorite of all chainsaw logos. I'll try to get a better picture, this one is kind of blurry. The air filter cover was missing...
