Christmas Giveaway - Arborist Site Decal Giveaway

My kids like to tell the story of how I fell out of a tree twice in the same day! Nothing like having a job close by where the family can come out and enjoy the show, all at my expense! Nothing really exciting for me, just reaching out a bit too far and losing my grip at just the right moment...

Small residential tree work set up

Don't be tempted to purchase a "smaller" chipper, whatever that may mean to you for your local needs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who used a too small for the job chipper and regretted every moment I had to fight to feed the less than straight and must be too big branches into that mouse...

Too many Close Calls in one Day

"Falls" were simple enough, reaching out too far for the next limb without setting a redirect or other means of safely traversing from one limb to another. No harm on that, just extra work getting back up in the tree. Always be tied in by at least one item, either the flip line or life line...

Too many Close Calls in one Day

I think most accidents are due to being careless. I don't believe I have ever had this many close calls in one day, it was a real wakeup after the day was over. I was once told to work slower than I think and think faster than I work. After the second incident I should have come out of the...

Too many Close Calls in one Day

I'm posting this here instead of the Injuries forum to hopefully direct you new guys over to that site and to preach a bit of safety. Started off the day well enough, nice, cool, and had my son-in-law for an experienced groundie. We always repeat out loud the address of where we're working...

Can't a guy buy a decent chain locally anymore?!

At $20 an hour 10 minutes is worth $3.30, 20 minutes is worth $6.60. The real cost is in lost production. If you're making $50 a production hour then that's $8.30 for 10 minutes and $16.60 for 20 minutes. That would pay for a chain because you know if you stop for any reason it's going to me a...

Can't a guy buy a decent chain locally anymore?!

Thanks for the correction. Still, it's spinning at 10,000 rpm, I just have never been able to tell the difference even with my smaller top handle saws with 12" bars.

Can't a guy buy a decent chain locally anymore?!

I agree with the philosophy to best use resources in the most cost effective way. In construction we "waste" a lot of stuff that others find valuable. It may make sense to hire one of the guys or some other person (high school level kid) to gather all the chains back at the shop & sharpen em...

    scratched my eye today

I gotta shut this down, laughing too much and working too little. Thanks for the stories Hu. Adventure is not found behind a desk!

    scratched my eye today

We get the Nat Geo specials about your critters down under. Seems like you can just "wake up" and be in danger in the Au. The one story I remember is about a Duckbill Platypus that stung a guy with its rear leg fang. The pain was so incredible they were thinking about amputating his arm, and...

    scratched my eye today

Made me laugh! I've had snakes bump my high top boots trying to strike, had squirrels hightail it out of trees I've been working in, once I even worked a tree with a beehive in the base of the trunk, but so far no snakes or other bad for my health critters up in the tree. Don't know if you...

    scratched my eye today

Wow! That makes my skin crawl. I had several run ins with poisonous snakes, none of em I want to repeat. One time in the military I was in training on patrol in North Texas (Camp Maxi), it was mid October with cool nights and warm days. Three other guys walked down the same path before I did...

    scratched my eye today

Now you've got me started. Spoke with an African friend one time, he said life was different before the White Man brought his way of life to their part of the bush. His uncle would have a deadly poisonous snake come sleep with him at night. He would wake up in the morning and lift the snake...

    scratched my eye today

My adult daughter has two she raised from babies. One is still alive and I guess makes a great pet? Go figure.

    scratched my eye today

I don't cut or climb without my Orange helmet with mesh visor & ear muffs plus safety glasses. Too many times I've been either bonked in the helmet or had my head in a weird spot that sends the chips flying right into the mesh visor. Buy an assortment of bandana skull caps from Walmart, it...

    Add on muffler Deflectors

I really hate rehashing old stuff but I just can't seem to find it after doing the diligent search for same. At one time there was a muffler mod thread that gave a part # for a deflector that could be attached with a couple of steel pop rivets. Since the AS crash (and my computer before that)...

    The Beg for Manuals Thread

Need an IPL or a Shop Manual for a MS 201t. Did a search and didn't see anyone else get replies on this, is this going to be a problem for me? Thanks ahead of time for replies!

    Saw for the boy

My vote is for a Husqvarna because it's well built and simple to maintain/repair. I can get Husqy parts just about anywhere and the saw is logically put together. The saw I reach for is the lightest and smallest that will still do the job which means it's either the T435 or the 346XP. Your son...

Sawdust bypassing filter on the 201t

Thanks for the replies, as a matter of fact it was a dull chain due to me not wanting to stop and switch saws while up in the tree, or some excuse that gets me out of being responsible for working with a dull chain. Yes, it's a felt filter, the bypass is coming from where the filter frame mates...

Sawdust bypassing filter on the 201t

Looked around a bit, couldn't find anything on the subject so I'll post and take what comes. Finally getting around to actually using/working with/on the verge of modding my Stihl ms 201t and noticed I'm getting some bypass around the filter into the carb intake. Even though it's fine...
