    HD PowerCare B&C Oil

Anybody else tried this oil? Got a gallon a bit back for $10, $1 less than Echo oil. Saws seem happy with it. Decent viscosity with temps in 50s-60s. Pretty tacky, difficult to wipe off your hands. Pretty wild user reviews, like one moaning about a smoking bar on doing some stumping with it...

    Yard Dog Chainsaw on Amazon

Anybody here see or run one of these puppies? (Not that I'm in the market, mind you.) Ships with two bars, which should outlive a couple or three power heads, of unspecified piston displacement. I'll be looking for them in competition events. :crazy2:

    New Arrival- 576XP

Arrived at @spike60's shop in Shokan NY to await my arrival for adoption yesterday. Will nicely complement Dolly 6100 in the big sticks we're cleaning up still from "Sandy", once we can get trail access again into work areas. Can hardly wait to get this beauty spewing chips. Was really hoping...

    Wood Fungi & Sinuses

Recently I got hit again, on bucking & noodling a big blowdown white oak for a couple hours. Fungi were in the sapwood of parts of it. At times I was working in a cloud of chips- very little dust from sharp chains, but apparently enough to ferry the nasties into a couple sinuses. Similar thing...

Lots More Bucked Wood Waiting in far SW CT

Like the subj sez. Black Locust & white ash mainly. Load & go, that simple. Come Friday, we'll be dropping and bucking lots more big BL blowdowns. About a mile off NY 22 in Armonk. 1-ton p/u or smaller would work. PM for details & directions.

    Relearned Old Lesson

STAY CLEAR OF THE REAR of the saw. When you see the kerf closing, you need to be able to pull the saw smartly all the way to the rear; that's reason one. While bucking logs, they will shift unpredictably, pinching bar and/or chain, as they please. Pinching the chain on the top of the bar can...

Council Tools 6 lb Sledge-eye Maul

Impressed by Council's 3.5 lb "Jersey-pattern" axe, for $25, and finding their 6 lb maul for same price, delivered, guess what ... What arrived was a utilitarian wood-busting tool with hickory handle and head with excellent smithy-work, meaning a properly hard and tough forging- something to...

Anyone Want Free BL Rounds on NY/CT Border?

In N Greenwich, Sandy blowdowns, bucked this summer. Some will need splitting before loading. Site is accessible to p/u but not heavy trucks. Help splitting/loading/hauling up to 10 mi. is possible, depending on the brew you bring. PM if interested.

    Midwest Gas Can 5600 Gasket

Has anyone found replacement gaskets for these "non-spill" gas cans? The black rubber gasket that wraps around the base of the spout. Best I can find is a whole replacement spout assembly for $10. When this gasket tears, it makes the can a "guaranteed to spill" gas can, if anyone from the EPA...

    Another Great Noodler

I was exercising my new Dolmar PS-6100 today and had a few black cherry forks that needed noodling. Besides the fact that this saw just ripped right through them, it also cleared the noodles very efficiently. This saw, and my PP5020 are the best I've seen at keeping clutch cover clear of chips...

    FODed 441C

That's Foreign Object Damage- seems a sorta-spherical piece of steel of about 3-4 mm diam got caught between the piston crown and the upper edge of the exhaust port right in the middle of the port. Impact pinched the upper ring tight and deformed the edge of the port enough to put a deep clean...

How Best c/s Black Cherry for Smoking

I've a couple of standing dead black cherry trees I'd like to prepare to sell for smoking, once the snow melts. I've heard green is best. What size resulting pieces are best for smoking? Length? Cross-section? Remove sapwood where you can see some fungus? Thanks for any tips.

    Your Best Noodling Saw?

Which works best for you? IME, stock PP5020 and RedMax GZ4000 work best- I simply can't get them to jam up their clutch covers with chips. OTOH, Husqy 455r clogs really quickly, though clutch covers are similar. Hoping to hear about some sleepers out there.

    Your Favorite Winter Chainsaw Gloves

What're your favorites for chainsawing/firewooding? Thanks to a few folks here, early this year I discovered "Atlas Fit" latex-palm gloves. Wear much longer than leather, excellent grip, just cold when it's down in the teens. Couple bucks/pair. Great for three-seasons in SW CT. Then on a tip, I...

    Clean Fuel Tank

Does anyone else clean their saw's fuel tank? Why, you ask? If the fuel filter pops off, or the fuel line breaks, poo in the tank gets to the carb. Not good. No matter how careful you are on fuelling the saw, some dirt gets in there. When a saw sits with fuel in the tank for more than a couple...

    Revised Maul Hit Parade

At Spike60's GTG Saturday, I had the pleasure of spending a few minutes show & tell with Bob (aka Spike) discussing our findings on modifying some basic-bludgeon mauls towards efficient tools. Turns out, we both independently took as models a couple of european mauls, Bob the Swedish Hults...

    Wetterlings 2.5 kg Maul

Anybody else liking this tool? Got one this week (good price) and really like it. Head forging hardness is Rockwell 58 C, totally beyond the material of fashion-fad in splitting tools. Really nicely made all around. A bit lighter at 5.5 lb than my other favorite maul. That makes it easier on...

    RedMax GZ4000 Big Carb Prob

Back in Dec, I bought a GZ4000 from dealer in WP. For a few months it was really awesome- responsive, powerful, clean-running. Then idle mixture went way lean- took it back to dealer for adjustment- fine again. (Manual said H & L carb screws could be adjusted 1/4 turn total; in fact zero...

Filing Depth Gauges with Granberg Guide.

I finally assembled the necessaries to resurrect this "illustrated guide" to filing saw chain depth gauges with Granberg "File-N-Joint". Because it's so simple and so generally necessary. Again, kibitzing is welcome. We assume that the file guide is set up to hold the common ~9" overall round...

    Granberg File Guide Setup

Drum roll, please. I finally figured how to do what it took to restore the pix to this show & tell guide, per request. This setup procedure has evolved for simplicity and efficiency, for wide variety of cutter types & sizes. 1. Clamp file to match cutter in holder. Mark first tooth for start...
