working on the 385xp and have heard from the forums you can drop in a 390xp jug on an 385xp.
but i also heard some of the early 385xps have a smaller clutch and may not be able to withstand the extra power, not sure how to tell which clutch assy i have.

i have a 2005 385xp, pretty early version of the saw i believe.
wondering if anyone has any info on what to look for on the early models.

I'm not completely sure about that 385. I know my modded 288xp can over power its clutch, but not to the point that I'd tell someone to not mod it. The 390 is the replacement for the 288 right?

The 385 was the replacement for the 288, then the 390 came about and it does a better 288 impression than the 385.

A 390 top end will fit on a 385, yes. I would just run it with a 390 P/C and see what happens. If it goes bad you add the clutch from a 390 and go back to work.
