Sorry if this doesn’t belong here, but I just wanted to thank everyone for the awesome threads and photos! It’s hard to get motivated sometime when you’re a full time employee, full time father/partner and living our lifestyle, but this site has motivated me to get my crap together and try to get out every day, even if it is only a tree or two.

We have big plans in the next couple years (planning our off grid homestead) so a lot has to be cut. Clearing our building lot, cutting a few hundred meters of ditch area, selectively cutting big SW trees to sell to a local mill, cut at least 7-8 cords of HW per year, plus a couple cords of SW.

It can get very cold here in Canada (-35 Celsius) and also a lot of snow (storms can give up to 50cm) but I’m stoked now looking at everyone’s signatures, posts and pictures.

I’ll be going outside today when my eldest naps to prep my gear for this coming week.

Anyway, thank you!

I wasn’t able to get out yesterday but I did today for the better part of 2-3 hours.
I went walking around the cabin in what are mostly softwood stands but with good size RM (red maple/acer rubrum) amongst fir and spruce. A little harder felling in between SW species but at least it’s not too far off main trails and should be easy access come spring time. I was very surprised at the amount and size of RM in these stands.

I didn’t bother processing what I fell today because it’s so much harder with snowshoes so I’ll come back when there’s less snow.

We acquired a 4x4 truck late last fall so hauling firewood should be much easier this season. Last year, I found myself with pulp hooks bringing out 4-8 ft lengths for +\- 100 meters at a time. I might only be 28 but I’m no Superman.

Oh and for those who are wondering why the high stumps, it’s because there’s a few feet of snow so I wasn’t too concerned where I cut the tree. They’ll be cut to ground level when I come back to process.

Here are a few pictures of today :)
