Came across a company removing this giant maple this week. I pulled in and asked if anybody had claimed the trunk, I wanted to mill it into slabs. Local guy who mills for a living of course had first claim but wasn’t committed yet. Didn’t know how to remove it since it was on a grass/park area and wanted to keep everything in tact as much as possible. I called for a boom truck...$300 minimum +tax to lift the log into a trailer...yeah right! At that point I was out and didn’t want to be $1000 into this thing with boom truck and purchasing it from the company. Then next day I stopped by to check it out after the laid it down and boy I’m glad I didn’t commit to anything! Inside was as hollow as could be! Really cool actually. The hole went about 4 feet underground and well up into the trunk. 15’ circumference DBH and 10-15’ tall. I knew it was going to have rot but didn’t expect this! Could make a hobbit house out of it and cut in a doorway.
