Ia anyone having muffler problems with the Stihl 020T.
They keep comming off of ours.

Thanks, we've tried Lock tite and even had some heliarched with new threads put in, I'm thinking that it is a manufacturers defect and that others with 020T's have experianced the same problem. Ken Six

What does your dealer say? At this point, if the helicoils didn't work, and the dealer won't work, look at the possibility of going oversize on the bolts abit, seek advice on the best Loctite to use under the heat and vibration of the saw (they make 101 different flavours, and maybe even talk to a fastener specialist (ie fastener retailer selling only fasteners) to get a lock washer that will help. Apply all three at the same time, have a beer while everything sets up, and try it the next day.

That's what I was gonna ask. What color is the loctite you are using. That usually will fix anything. Oversizing bolt on the 020T will be difficult as the magnesium walls arent really thick to begin with.

I want to thank you both for your responses and excellent advice, I guess if these were just regular chain saws I would be thinking solution. These saws cost $425.00 each and the muffler is hard to get to, it not like a Poulan or a side mounted muffler, it's under the body and inside the casing, anyway I can see this happening one or two saws but not all of them.I may switch to the echo GS3000 dispo-a-saw. 020t problems

I have (4)020T oldest being 2 yrs old have not had a problem with anything. the oldest has been used at least 5hrs a day in the last yr, removal saw

I've got 3 of them and no problems like that. I've even taken the muffler off one of them a couple times for a different problem and hasn't loosened up yet

yes the 20t did have a defect, in the muffler.as of mid 2000 its supost to be corrected.? time will tell

Why do these saws continue to be so expensive? They are well supported here in N.Z however other Arborists l talk to are resenting the price (currently $1450= N.Z Dollars.)How do Americans feel?

Thats a question for Stihl themselves. Yes they are priced high, but you just cant find a better built saw on the market. At least hear in the states they have dropped, over $200.00 from a few years ago.

yeah, I remember when they where $650 to $700. I remember how many we sold when the price dropped. People went nuts because they went to $459. When I went to Germany and went to dinner with Stihl. (We were sent there for being a key dealer). The owner said that the 020T in his opinion was the best saw ever made. Thats why it might be high. He is really proud of them.

Yes Stihl, at least pa. west stihl ditubrators, Use to send the key dealers on trips. It made me want to sell more. They quit that out in Cal. any way.I worked my rear off trying to get that trip.Never made it.Alot of things have changed in the past 30 yrs. or so.

So what is the current price now in the states of the 020.
I've sent two e-mails direct to Germany now with my view on their pricing regime but so far have had no reply,that was six weeks ago.It wasn,t all ***** either I have owned five Stihl saws now and told them the 046 magnum would have to be the best saw ( power to weight ) ratio that I,ve ever used.I,d just like to see the price come down on what is a well supported saw to an Industry that supports Stihl products greatly here in N.Z. I suggested that if they dropped the price to that of the Husqvarna equivalent they would have the market.There,s no question in my mind that the 020T is THE best tree saw on the market,I,d just like to see a better price.

Dont think that Stihl is the only one that does this. I have been on trips for Husky, Echo, and Stihl. The other companies do the same thing.
