So a friend lets me know that he had a couple of trees dropped and the wood is free for the taking. Would I be interested? Yes, and whatever you do, don't mention it to anyone else I say.

Oak holds leaves well.

Back when forest fires were still common around here (a century ago 3% of Connecticut burned annually) oak saplings that still had their leaves come spring were one of the factors in the intensity and spread of the fires. A fire along the ground would catch the low leaves, which were tinder dry since they weren't on the ground, and they readily took flight landing ahead of the main head to speed up the spread even more.
