Leaves still in the trees?! It's pretty well winter here!

Oak holds leaves well.

Back when forest fires were still common around here (a century ago 3% of Connecticut burned annually) oak saplings that still had their leaves come spring were one of the factors in the intensity and spread of the fires. A fire along the ground would catch the low leaves, which were tinder dry since they weren't on the ground, and they readily took flight landing ahead of the main head to speed up the spread even more.

That's some good stuff. I have a bunch of white oak and chestnut oak in my pile just waiting to be burned.
