My neighbor offered up a very large ash tree that has been down in his pasture for about a year. So i grabbed the 210 for limbs & the 034 for the big stuff, extra chains, the 24 ton splitter & headed out. I almost threw the 024 super in the truck, but didn't.....{mistake}. So right off the bat i managed to bend the chain tensioner on the 034(yes i am embarresed), so my neighbor says,"Go grab my 440 mag, it has abrand new chain on it". I had seen that saw comfortably tucked in its plastic case in his shop on more than one occasion, & always wanted to run it(the thing is almost new). So, i grab it, fire it up and.......can't make a cut thru a 20" log??? The bar starts smoking right off the bat. Shut it down, check the chain....hmmmm, it's not Oregon or Stihl & it's dull as hell. Oiler is working fine. Neighbor says "Hey there are 2 brand new chains on my work bench". Yep, some kind of Home Desperate or Lowes off brand...SAFETY CHAIN. Go to mount one of them....both 2 inches shorter than needed:monkey: . I rumage around in the saw case & find a Oregon, take it home(2 miles away), run it thru the grinder(& grab the 024). Drive back, fire it up, still smoking the bar????? Check the oil.....uhhunh...motor oil:mad:. Dump it, fill it up with BAR OIL, fire it back up & it cuts sideways. Inspect the bar & of course it needs dressing really bad..........arggggg!
Screw it, fire up the 024 & cut 90% of the tree up in about as much time as i messed around with the borrowed saw. So, the next day i go pick up a new bar & 2 Stihl skip chains for the 440 mag. Yes i made him pay for them, the penality for letting his "handy man" use his saw. I told him to go buy a Wild Thing for the handy man as he should never be allow in the same room with the 440 again.
BTW, i just had to go out and cut up a few of the monster rounds with the 440 & it's new bar & chain.....wow, what a nice saw. I should report him to the Saw Police, but he is also a friend & friends don't rat on friends....

Motorseven, now that there is funny!!

I hate to show myself as being really dumb, though inspite of that I do more often than not, but–-and this is a serious question–-how do you bend a chain tensioner?? I used to have an 034, don't remember a way it could be done??? I don't doubt it happened, I just can't picture what would do it.

I have a 024 AV that I bought , I think around, 1988 (?) Geez I'm gettin' old! Anyhow I LOVE that saw! I've bought and sold maybe over a dozen saws since I've bought that one and it's still my "go to" saw. It's small enough to climb with and 'big' enough to get me through stuff it has 'no business' cutting. At one time I had a 20 in bar on it cutting hardwoods quite regularly.

I personally dont like using anyone else's saw unless Im cutting wood with that person.
My girlfriend's dad has a tree trimming business, so he has Stihl saws ranging from a MS180 to an 088, not to mention that he has a Stihl 600 backpack leafblower and an $8,000+ zero-turn riding mower with a Cylcone Rake and he has told me that Im welcome to borrow any of them any time I want, but I wont.
I have used his stuff before when doing work on their farm. Yesterday I used the backpack blower while my girlfriend and I were cleaning up the leaves (backpack blowers rule, BTW), but thats as far as it goes.
As you would expect, he has a policy of, "you break it, you buy it" and I just rathar not deal with the drama of something getting broken.

Loaner Saw...

That's why I have a Poulan Pro 4218. If someone wants to borrow a saw, then they get the Polan. If someone needs the "pro" saws, then I do the work for them.

ONCE, I loaned out my 353 to a friend. He was supposed to use it for "just a couple of hours". I said OK, but under the condition that the saw be returned that night (I needed to finish some tree work the next day). Next day...no saw. I call him up and tell him that I need the saw to finish my work. He says that he needs to "clean the saw up a bit first". Now I'm worried. I tell him that I'm in a hurry and that I will clean the saw up.

When I got the saw, it looked like he used it to dig post holes, followed by burying it in the mud. The saw was full of dirt. Not wood-chips, DIRT. I'm guessing that he worked a stump at his house. He is such a great guy, that I bit my tongue. Some people just don't know how to take care of stuff.

Lesson learned. Loan out the "beater". Following Hurricane Ike, I loaned out the Poulan to a couple of neighbors. The saw came back with the chain and sprocket fried. $25 in parts to put it back together again...
