Earlier this summer I smoked my 460, piston burnt, rings snapped and she was done. i replaced the saw with a Shidiawa 757. Love 757 but I am really missing my Stihl. i did keep all the peices. and was thinking of putting a new top end on or even an aftermarket big bore kit. i am a very seriuos firewwod cutter not a full time chainsaw user. Any one have any experiance with doing this rebuild. Is it something an average amatuer mechanic can do. My brother is a wiz at fixing stuff, if he can get motivated to do it, he said he could help.
ifigure the saw is toast anyway so if it doesnt work out I'll just be out my time and parts. Any info woud be great. Thanks

Junk, if you want ill take it and pay for shipping so you dont bother your trash guy with it. :greenchainsaw:

$40.00 and shipping lol.... hey a 460 is a mean saw if you build it up right best bet is to rebuild via; big bore kit or oem

Got 41.00 plus shipping and i have a heated garage your baby will stay in and
it will only come out in nice weather and cut the softest of wood.
These other guys are abusers .LOL

For the price of a new saw these guys will talk you through it and save some
money .Oh and the big bore will be getting sold on you.

Top ends are pretty easy to do. Go search for the "beg for manuals" thread and beg for a factory service manual for MS460 then read it.

You'll need a long shank T27 torx driver and giant tie wrap to compress the rings.

You can probably complete the rebuild long before your brother in law get's motivated - I know the type.

Short answer is yes. You should rebuild it, it's do-able by a back yard mech.

Take pictures as you go. Ask questions. Perhaps one of those tightwad Stihl dealers would even be so kind as to forward you a copy of a certian manual that gives you the break down and assemble procedures...

Oh and lastly, remember the wives dishwasher is perfect for getting everything nice and clean.

I'll go $42 plus shipping ;)

:ices_rofl: I scooped you all on this one! :D

I just made him an offer via PM that he can't refuse. Expect him to post up shortly stating that he has accepted my offer.

$ 50.00 and you don't have to bother packing and shipping, i'm in Pa. also, and not too far away, so i'll just come get it tomorrow..... ok, done deal !!!!!!!

This was like throwing a side of beef into a cage of starving Lions.

You guys should be ashamed BTW I will only let my 90 year old grandmother run
it at bingo and i will go 51.00 plus shipping. LOL

I promise to give a home in the country with a big yard where it can run and run and run, $52 and shipping.

100 + shipping.

Rebuilding a saw isn't too hard to do. A manual would help a ton. It will take you a decent amount of time because everything will be foreign, but nothing is impossible to do. A big bore kit is the way to go. Once you get it assembled, you will need to pressure test it. It obviously got too hot, so an air leak or straight gas was the culprit. You can make a pressure tester system yourself or you can have your dealer do it.

:greenchainsaw: WOW, I never thought I would get so many responces. I got an offer that that seems way to high, but I might have to take him up on it. I thought my CAD was bad but some of you guys must be completly wasted. I still think I am going to try a rebuild after the holidays, I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks for all the offers and info. This site rocks!!!

Make sure to clean very well before disassembly & diagnose what caused the falure,,, Makes it so much nicer and easy to keep clean when going back together,,, may aswell dualport the muffler and clean the ports up while there!!!!

Make sure to pressure test the crankcase before throwing a new top end on unless you know for sure that running it with straight gas was the reason the old piston went south. Those saws don't just spontaneously combust without a reason.
