Thank you VERY much for all the reply's guys! I'm going to have to do some more research... Good thing for this site! I know my father is a buy USA sort of guy, and that is why he loved the old Mac's, I'll have to be careful with what I purchase for him... I know the Husky's are made over the pond, is Stihl made over here? or Dolmar? Thanks again, I'll have to do some more research, maybe even see if there are some good youtube videos of these mentioned saws in action... I guess anything has to be better them his old PM... But I'll tell ya what, that thing was a f'ing beast back in the day... Still sort of scares me to hear it idle... Gotta love it though! Thanks again!

Max

Unfortunately, none of the new saws with the displacement you need are American-made.

That PM650 with 24" bar is probably right at 20#. A Stihl 660 with 25" is 23#, a 460 21#, and the Husqvarna/Jonsered 372xp/2171 probably right at 20# with 24". The PM650 might have made 4.5hp, and the 372/2171 are probably closer to 5.4 and the others higher.

He might be happier with a lighter saw like a Stihl MS361. Its still 4.4hp, but much lighter and smoother.

Yeah, there are a lot of power junkies here, myself included. As much as I like my 066s, I prefer to run a lighter saw for cutting firewood.

I'm the man in my pants.
I've checked the prices of the 660 and I'm sure I could get together some more coin... ($1000 + or -) I don't mind, he's been a good father to me! :)

Whatever saw you choose you're doing the right thing by checking here first and by doing something good for the man that raised you. There's good people and good advice here. Cheers and check your rep.

If you get along with him as well as you say you do. I would consider getting him some Viagara and see if he develops other intrests. Cheaper for you. Instead of a new chainsaw. Safer for him, provideing he stays at home.
Seriously Id look hard at a 372 Im a big fan of those and it will probably be passed on to you.

All great things here... That's the deal, I want a good light saw for him, with good power. He only busts out the PM650 for the big dogs, he still has some other Mac's for the little things, 18 or 16 inch, I forget... I will look into the saws that you all have mentioned and I will poll a few of my wood cutting buddies to see if they have some that are listed here on this thread so I can get a feel for them. Thank you again!

Thanks a lot, that means a great deal to me. My dad busted me good when I was growing up and I can always remember him saying, "you'll thank me when your older" very true words! So I think it's pretty fair to say he is a good guy and I know a new saw would make for a good present! :)

Good point with the "little blue pill" how ever his old lady put on a few pounds and he seems more interested in working on his cars and such... Guess that is what happens when you get older... Yikes!

Hell, I bet you still walk the line when around him. A man that messes with rounds that big deserves some respect.

Although he has a work around for the big rounds, a vertical splitter would really make a big difference. I get the big rounds from the neighborhood because I can split them. A 36" round split in half is way to much to lift. A 460 with a sharp chain will go through most logs.

Welcome Max I am new here myself. I noticed you are from NW Ohio. Maybee you should consider going to the Ohio gtg. You could probably see most of the saws mentioned here in action. I wish I lived closer I'd be there for sure. Just a thought

Looking at the pictures of your dad, he looks like a great guy that works hard and knows how to have fun. The other members who've recommended the 372xp are spot-on. The 660 is a little big for just the occasional large round. All the wood in your pictures would be easily handled by the 372. The 441 is a great saw but the 372 just has that fun factor that can't be beat. Other brands, well, they're just not as fun.

Plan B

Ask to borrow one of his favorite worn out saws.
Bring it back after a rebuild, may take no more than a set of rings and some gaskets.
Looking at his taste in cars I would guess that he will realy apreciate the old workhorse being brought back up to spec.
After that offer to work with him to rebuild the others, a project the two of you both will enjoy and time spent neither of you will ever regret.
If he rebuilt the 312 himself, a saw should be no big project.
