A while back there was talk about converting a Super to the 52mm magnum cylinder and piston.

Do the mufflers and intakes match???

Has anybody done one yet?

Same Question

Hey Romeo,

I had the same question recently. Here is the thread and response. Essentially you have to manipulate the Mag jug to match the Super crankcase. MadProfessor also has a thread where he talks through the steps he took.

I have not tried as of yet, I will focus on getting the saw running as a Super and then proceed from there. If it were a one for one swap...

Good luck and take some photos and post so we can all learn.

The intake boot and muffler are the same, mounting wise. Some of the mufflers had additional outlets but knowing you, you can make as many as you want. It's not going to be a challenge for a guy who has built several bikesaws to put a 52mm Magnum top end on a Super case.

It looks like I am going to give it a shot. Its for a friend, hes been cutting with the old super for a long time. He finally burned it up and of course didn't want to pay the four bills to get it rebuilt so he picked up a new 460. I am going to build him a woods hotrod to carry as a backup.

I think you'll be able to make it into a real good runner. Let us know how it turns out please.

I beat if you do a hot woods port, he will relegate that 460 for backup.

I've done a couple, I'm sure you'll have no problem with it.

A super base gasket is handy to scribe out the location of the screw positions on the mag cylinder, the resulting slots make an angle and you grind more in one direction (front to back) than the other (side to side). You'll need a dremel with some carbide bits to grind the outside of the barrel to allow the cyl screw heads to seat and/or thread into the case. Most of the access holes also have to be opened up so you can get the T-27 to the bolt heads. A 7/32 chain file does that fine, I chucked one in a drill.

The intake bolts right up as does muffler. The mag exhaust port is a bit wider and I matched the super muffler to it.

I opened up the existing slots on a dual port muffler and also opened up the baffle inside.

I used an OEM P/C , a Bing carb with the above muffler and it's stronger than my 038 mag (maybe not a great comparison as this one has lots of hours on it).

It runs fine with the original Tillston carb and it has the same venturi size as the Bing; I used the Bing as I heard good things about them here.

If you come up with anything interesting to do besides the basic conversion let me know. I've got another 038S ready (another bad gas freebie) for the same type of conversion.

This might also be doable with an 038 AV too, but the service manual mentions having to grind the case a bit to get a super cyl to fit an AV.

How far off center are the holes?

Each one about 0.040 front to back and about 0.020 side to side, it's an angled slot, not straight towards the bore center. When you are done slotting them out there is still enough left for a good seal on the base gasket (e.g. don't go too far). You need the same slots on the 038M gasket. I used a file and dremmel.

When you are done with the slots you can grind the barrel back so the T-27 bolt heads will be able to seat on the base of the cylinder. Make sure that you can get to the heads before you put the piston on, that is open up the access holes and check that you can get to the heads, a trial fit up.

Well I got one together this weekend. I didn't take any pics though.

The intake matches, but the muffler intake port needs to be widened around .250" but the bolt holes match. I also modded the muffler, still only 2 ports but I took some meat out and made them much larger. I ended up having to turn the top of the head bolts down around .040" to clear the jug. The mount holes in the jug had to come in diagonally around .030". I also did a mild woods port to it. This little saw runs great, I am sending it home today and I think the guy will be pleased when he runs this little 72cc saw up against his new 460.

Glad you had success too!

Sounds like about what I did minus the woods port. Also , didn't have a lathe to turn the bolt heads so ground back the cyl instead.

Kind of funny about how the DP muffler is narrower than the exhaust port as they used the same muffler on the 038 M? There seems to be plenty of screen behind the existing exit ports to allow them to be opened up quite a bit.

I'll be doing another soon, what did your woods porting consist of? Clean up ports and widen intake/exhaust? Did you use a gasket or bump the compression a bit and raise the exhaust port?

so was there enough meat left on the bolt heads? We are talking about the main jug bolts right? And you didn't have to remove any meat from the jug for the heads? If so does this mean you can do it without a die grinder/dremel? I'm hoping to not have to buy one...

I made a .008 thin gasket, raised the exh. port 4 degrees over stock, and widened and cleaned everything up. Nothing drastic.
