this is one wierd looking saw IMO, its too narrow for its length. how well do they run??? are they reliable? do they respond to mods well? tell me what you think of the MS280!!

Well, I want one, the automatic fuel mixture adjustment is appealing. Good power to weight ratio. I think it is a beautiful thing to behold, humpbacked like a whale, graceful and svelt. I just handled one today at the saw shop when I stopped by for oils and a chain.

i just told the dealer it looked like a dolphin lol.... auto fuel mixture adjustment?? Carb screws?????

My dealer recently gave me a very late model one with IEM that had been straight gassed. I put a new OEM piston in it and it ran like a charm. Nice running saw. No H needle. It's been replaced with an electronic device that fits in the same location and is controlled by an intelligent module in the coil.

On some models (IEM), no H screw.. and you don't need it. It electronicly adjust the H mixture to optimal in or out of the wood... Works freakingly well...

It will even adjust to a modded muffler:jawdrop:

I actually like the looks of it. Kind of sleek.

What's the life expectacy on the new ms280 intelli carb? Just curious. I guess if it goes, the saw is screw? No h adjustment

Long time...

In any case, the carb solenoid assy is a simple replacable part. The electronics is in the ignition.

I've got a customer with a year old MS280 and has cut 50+ facecord of firewood without an issue. Not sure how he has cut that much and admits he only owns 2 chains.

is the ms-280 a us saw only, i was just on the stihl.ca website and there's a 270, 290, 390, i cant find a 280 any where.

Does the 280 have noticeably more power than a 270? The website only lists 0.2hp - which I cannot see making a difference?

What about a muffler modded 270?

In my humble experience...

My first saw was a 028WB that I thought was great -- about 1983 vintage. Then it disappeared. Figured it grew feet and ran away. So I went to the shop and put down money for a pre-IEM MS280 (three years ago). Smoother, felt a little heavier, better vibration management.
Wouldn't ya know it. Two months later the 028 shows up, buried under a bunch of stuff ON MY WIFE's SIDE OF THE GARAGE -- where I never go! :dizzy:

So now I have a backup. Run a 16" on the 028 and an 18" on the MS280.
I bucked a lot of 20" or less red oak this past summer with some old blowdowns. Found myself reaching for the MS one mostly.
