Sometimes starting fluid is useful to get an old unused saw to kick over and suck out the lump of snot blocking the carb.

Thanks, Andy. I did not know that, and I would never have tried it because of the lubrication issues.

Is it useful for nasal congestion? LOLOL

Congratulations, ZeroJunk, On you rgood fortune! I just cam in from using my 056, and there is nothing quite like it. If I had an 066, I would keep it, because the 056 is a heavy brute, and the pistons are NLA after all. It would be more of a recreational saw, to be pulled out of the garage kind of like a favorite classic car, driven every so often and enjoyed every time.

I sometimes use WD40 to start stubborn 2 strokes, cause it's propane with lubricant.

This is my stance on ether. If a engine regardless if it is diesel,or gas a two stroke or a four stroke needs ether to start it needs repair. Everything I have will start on its own with out the help of ether, because all ether is for is just to get by.

Well that comment didn't seem to make sense until I saw your location. Try starting diesel motors, like tractors in cold weather without ether. The ether actually helps save stress on the system until the block starts to warm up.

I believe too much use in 2 stroke is not good as it lacks good lubrication properties.

Not if you bought it in the past few years.. it has a CO2 Propellant... and CO2 is a fire extinguisher! Oh... WD40 isn't a lubricant... Hey, that 2 out of 2 down;)

As for starting fluid.. buy the type with lubricant, or, like I do.. a squirt bottle of standard mix...

I was wondering if it had been changed. I have several old cans, having stocked up for 99 cents a can a few years back. Thanks for the info on that.

I have a little squirt bottle of mix, too. It does work.

I understand location as well, as I have seen some of the equipment used to make the Alaskan highway. If you look at the bottom of the engines and belly pans you will see it was covered in soot were they built fires under the engine to warm it up. But if I had equipment in the sever conditions you live in I would rather use heating elements or kerosene heaters to preheat the engine. Oh, by the way congrats on the 056 you got, looks good. I believe that is the most important thing in the tread.

Yup, used to have I think, a propane propellant, now C02...but it will still burn. Spray some on a lit match and see what happens...haha.

Will it start a small engine....nope.

I like the 3N1 starter fluid, but I keep an old SLIME bottle with some 32:1 in it, with a hose on the top, laying around for starting fresh rebuilds, old motors, etc..

Diesels...no either, I might dribble some diesel in, but I like to just bleed and bleed until it starts on its own.

Carb cleaner works for me.

It has no lubrication value, and is actually a solvent, so whatever oil is present gets washed away. Little less volital than ether, just as dangerous to an engine.

Rule of thumb...if you wouldnt feel safe running your engine on it for 30 seconds...it doesnt need to be run on it at all.

Spray carb cleaner in the carb of a 2 stroke, one pull and the cylinder is oil free. 3-4 pulls and the bottom end is dry. If it does catch and run, you are running it hot, and dry.

Only when mix makes its way to the engine does lubrication occur, if that takes 400-500 revolutions, engine wear has occurred.

Well I hope you're not going to make a base gasket out of that tube of silicon sitting there under the saw.;)

Actually, I just wanted to give a suggestion on the starting fluid thing:

+1 When used properly, it's good stuff.

Congrats on your saw !!

Thanks for sharing in my good luck. Wonder if there is anything on this top shelf I shouldn't be using.

I'd say just that old butcher knife ya got hanging there, it looks a mights dull. I'd like have that knife to cut Woodie with, make him suffer in agony, hehe

I'm all for the hornet and wasp spray. Where I fish there are wasp nests the size of basketballs. Your work area looks nicely organized, with 660 potential there.

Looks like a typical CAD sufferer's shop to me. BTW, the 056 is good medication for that. What does the cylinder go to?
