For example, 21" for an 880 Magnum? Huh? Are these really the optimal lengths?

nope, sure doesn't but have any of you ever seen a 20" bar on a big saw like a 660 or 880 or Husky 395 or 3120, they look very small.makes no sense really...

when I first got my 394 it had a 20 on it, that bar looked about 15 inches long and cut pretty good too.My 660 runs a 20" quite often. My 084 has a 25" bar on it most of the time. can never have to much power.
you're right there but I now keep the 36" on it and it stays in the truck except for big trees. To me it doesn't matter what it looks like, its how good it cuts.
Here's the chart where I think you're getting your info-- btw- I had the same thoughts about their recommended bar lengths. Seems screwy to me.

My 3120's run a 16" from time to time for Norwegian big woods cutting and my 084's run 20's............................
.
I like the way they recommend a longer bar for the 441 than the 460, and a longer one for the 650 than the 660...
