I have 4 really big maple's that are in my back yard that need to be dropped.

I just bought a old farm house and have 4 big maples in the back yard. This fall I am planning on putting a addition on the house. These trees are really old and I am thinking of the future. I have a big space to drop them right now, that will be gone when the addition gets put up. Even though these trees are fine now, I am seeing that in 5 years or so they will start to die, then I will be talking about needing climbers in the tree and maybe even a crane or bucket truck.

These trees are leaning the right way, but they are just to big for me, i do not feel comfortable with doing this job.

This is probably the wrong place to post this, but what do you guys think is a reasonable price to have a tree service to come in and drop them. I will take care of the rest, I just want them on the ground, and not on my house.

how big exactly are they? if its an easy drop whyr you uncomfortable doing it? (but since you are dont do it, just wondering why) pictures please. and i dont have my own tree sevice but hypothetically speaking.... if all you have to do was notch and drop, and it was absolutely cake, no need to even wedge why would it be a couple hundred a tree to just let it lay? 800$ for less than an hours work?

not trying to pick a fight its just that here in oregon things are diff than there. few hundred bucks here for a notch and drop is crazy. especially on a healthy tree

I just dont feel confident enough to take these trees down myself. Sorry, I dont know how to post pics and dont have a digital cammera.

I cannt wrap my arms around the trees, I would say they are 30"+ in diameter and 50'+ high. They are all leaning in the direction that they need to be dropped.

Hello,
I'm with TreeCo on this one. We just got new people move in to the house next to us. We live in a very nice community with lots of trees. Well, the first thing that the people did after buying the house was to have about 5 big trees cut down in the front yard. I have no idea why they did this, the trees were fine for the people that lived there before them. I don't think that they were sick or anything....it was very sad to see those nice trees being cut down !!!!

well friend if i was anywhere near you id do it for 25 a tree. but alas im not and you will probably have to pay more to have it done, or maybe you will consider leaving them.

If these were the only trees in my yard I would leave them. But I have about 40 acers of trees, and these are right on the edge of the woods, and right behind them are a bunch more trees.

You obviously don't pay for liability insurance.

A group of us maintain an old schoolhouse, which is used as a community center. 5 huge old oaks, 2 of which have roots that are compromising the stone foundation. Price from a tree service to take down, remove stumps,
$3K. It's not going to be easy, bucket truck needed.

I agree with Mr Genius completely. Take em out now.
I hate it when people buy a place and proceed to wreck the landscape, largely out of ignorance.

So the trees are fine now but you see in five years that they will start to die. What do you have.....a pair of Superman glasses? LOL!
If those trees are old and very large I would bet money they are at least somewhat hollow inside. If they are not a danger to a house then yes let them be. But if their height was such that they could hit a structure regarless of the lean, I would want them gone. The Ohio hurrican last fall proved a tree leaning away means nothing in a storm.

Why should an insurance company have to pay for a tree and repair damage when the threat could have been delt with before the storm? I told a short story about a neighbor of mine this year and huge Hickory tree that didn't grow 80' tall next to the house. The house was built right next to the tree about 5' away cause the original owners thought it was nice to have it there. NO! it was a liablilty because as it turned out it was 80% hollow inside. If it had been me I would have not bought the place before those hazards were removed. And to think they could have felled the tree very cheaply before the house was built. Now as it was it cost them dearly. That was pure stupidity IMO. I have planted trees around my new home over the past 15yrs. If any tree gets too large and becomes a threat to the house down it will come long before a storm will get a chance at it.

the liability insurance is for the person removing the tree not the HO. That is why I charge more than $20 per tree to notch and drop. It costs me $100 just to walk on site basically.

well cool for you. thats kinda lame though. come look at a few trees for someone and before you leave "oh you owe me a hundred bucks cause i walked on site" lol no offense to ya im sure thats just how things work down there. im still wondering why the guy dont do it himself lol hes got a 460.

barkbuster. clearly when dude stands next to these big old yard trees and looks up, he kinda realizes it would be a little more fun for him to buck them up with his sling'r460 than to try and drop them. i respect his decision and am glad to hear that he is going to get the job done right and not risk his life. thats a good move. commendable even.

i'd say probably 100$ a tree if they are as you say they are biggenius.

i agree with you if he dont think he can do it safely he shouldnt attempt. but its a simple feat.
