be careful with portable genererators

I sold my generator when I moved last year, wish I took pics of setup. It had a five foot coupler that went to a modified car muffler, this made it quiet and allowed me to run it in my back porch, while venting gases outside, kinda like being inside but it wasn't because there was a door between house and porch.
My buddy Jim has a spikeboard around his Honda generator he uses at deer camp, no problems yet, but he gases up before dark!

one more reason to have QUIET generators, and put them in the back yard out of site. I love my little EU2000i's. Hardly make any noise at all, and use very little fuel.

The honda EU series generators are excellent. I have a EU2000 and a EU6500 and they are fantastic. They are mouse fart quiet and with the ecothrottle they just sip fuel. Only fault is the cost. Aint cheap but worth every dime. Carbon Monoxide is bad news. Good thread to remind all to check CO and smoke detectors in the home.

To run the 1500W heater, when it is -20. it is a nice comfort, also those of us that are 40+ need to go for a short walk in the night, we turn on the camp light
outside.

don't you have a wood stove at camp? seems teh 40+'s could fill it on their "short walks" all night long, and carry a flash lite or lantern..............

the safe way is to have about 5-6 or more deep cell boat batterys and have a powerrful inverter that converts 12v to 110 v current that is the safest way

Smart full-time RVers have solar panels and as many 6 volt, 220AH, deep-cycle, golf cart batteries as their RVs can carry. Boat batteries are semi deep cycle, not full deep cycle.

The forced air furnaces in RVs will complete drain the batteries overnight. The forced air furnace's in RVs are extremely noisy.

Many use catalytic LP gas heaters which don't emit Carbon Monoxide gas. However, catalytic heaters do deplete the air of oxygen.

Good idea, though you would still need a generator to charge the batteries.
I've often thought of doing what you described. Given that I have 4 large batteries, would a 1500W inverter power my shack essentials for say 12 hrs., with the generator running half that time to charge the batts?
Thanks,
John

outhouse woes

My uncle had an outhouse. During the winter an icy draft came up from underneath the seat. I got on and off that outhouse seat in a hurry.

The funniest thing I ever saw was a guy scrambling out of an outhouse with his pants still down. The house hadn't been used in quite a while, and there was a nest of wasps under the seat. An icy draft is no big deal.

One reason is they get stolen outside. Chaining them to a tree is about useless, because that is just a bolt cutter away from stolen. I have heard of theives quickly adding a very long extention cord to the generator. The homeowner doesn't realize the short loss of power. Then the theives just start to carry the generator off and its in the truck before the homeowner can "get them".

A shotgun and shovel would really help with a lot of these cases. Especially since the law enforcement services are already maxed out, they can't investigate every loud BOOM, that gets reported. One or two graves in the back yard will go mostly unoticed if flowers are quickly planted in the spring.

Just here to help,

Sam

FWIW, I have an "RV" Onan 4KW generator in my detached garage/barn... It's bolted to a frame I welded up, with a boat gas can (fuel guage, etc) next to it on the frame, as well as a motorcycle battery... I just welded a 1.5" exhaust pipe to it, and it turns up, has (2) car mufflers, goes up to the gable and through it, then once outside, goes up above the roof and has a tractor-style flap on the top that the exhaust moves out of the way... Works really well, isn't real quiet inside the shop, but the exhaust outside is very quiet, and doesn't attract attention like the portable ones do... Plus, it's inside my detached garage, so it's out of the weather and snow... and thieves...

In your neck of the woods it could have been a copperhead, a man has got to protect his assets.

Last years ice storm....

After 2009 ice storm, several people died from generator exhaust
into their homes. They are handy if you don't have electricity, but
CO, carbon monoxide from exhaust will kill if not vented properly.

I didnt have elect. for 2 weeks,,and was lucky I was on the ball and called sears up the first thing when my elect. went out and they put me on a pickup list....Now I got home,,and was wondering...I have a long,,,wide poarch and did a drop cord where my gen. couldnt get wet,,but was wondering what if I didnt have a poarch,,where would I have put it where it wouldnt get hammered with the weather....Maybe some folks can come on here and tell what they had to do in that situation....I also made sure,,even it was outside,,it was away from any doors or windows.....Hope to see some good safe tips here....

What I was wondering Bro...

What if you didnt have a detached garage,, barn....Just a home with no cover over it...Kinda what I was gettin at....The instructions with my gen. said save the box for a cover,,and I thought,,,thats gotta be insane,,me going to bed and have a cardboard box covering the motor,,and it catches on fire and someone burns to death....

Put it on the porch with an exhaust extension going above at least the gutters...
