Homelite Chainsaws

Had a Homelite Mini XL, type 10084 given to me about a year ago.

Did not have a chance to get it running until today. Can anyone tell me what they know about this saw (specs)?

Have any pics Rick? Is it a rear-handle saw with an air filter cover at the top/rear of the saw? If it's the saw I'm thinking of, then it's a VI (Vibration Isolation.....Homelite's term for AV) version of an E-Z or Super E-Z. Some had chainbrakes. A fellow posted pics of a sweet one here a couple of pages back. They're a little saw (2.1 or 2.5ci, 34.4 or 41cc) with a lot of 'attitude'. They run like they think they're much bigger. They take the same bars as the mid-size Husqvarnas. Look for a bar that's spec'd for a 257 or a 262 Husky.

If it instead is a tiny little 'clamshell-cased' top-handle saw with a little foam air filter in the front, then it's of the XL2/Super2 family. 30-ish cc saws. Some guys love 'em. I'm not real enthused. They are pretty dang reliable. I have a friend who calls 'em "bics" after the cheap but reliable cig lighters and pens.

That's sweet. Never seen a blue XL-Mini. That's not the VI version (no big loss). That's what was also called an "XL-1" for non-US sales. It's the same saw as an E-Z. I guess Homelite figured the "E-Z" play on words (meaning "easy") would be lost on folks outside of the states. They were sold in Canada as XL-1's. I thought the XL-Mini was the later one, only sold as VI. Learn something every day. I REALLY dig the blue/white colors and the checkered flag decal on the starter. Cool saw. I just learned of yet another Homelite that I MUST have someday...

It has a manual thumb oiler, does it have a auto one as well?

Remove the clutch cover. You'll see the gear driven oil pump in the drivecase behind the clutch if the saw is an auto-oiler. I'm thinking it's probably not, since the saw doesn't say "auto" on it.

That saw should be from around 1972 or so. Most likely is 2.1ci/34.4cc like a 'standard' E-Z.

Here's Mike Acres' listing on that model. I'd have thought the saw would have been from around 1969 or so since it's blue. There's no hard and fast rule for the 'color change' on Homelite models. Some folks will say the switch from blue to red happened in 1971. I don't agree..........at least it wasn't a 'complete' or sudden change that has a defined date. There are also a few errors on Acres' excellent site..........so the date could be off...

All this talk of mini vi's and super ez'z I figured I would post a couple pics of these saws I picked up in the last few weeks:
The mini vi. It started and ran but might need some tweaking

The serial number on it is 12210913 if that helps anything.

Also this is the only saw that I have that recommends 32;1 mix is that what needs to be run in it with todays oil? I run 40;1 in all my other saws.

Run it the same as your other saws, it will be fine. The key isn't what amount of oil in the mix, its oil in the mix.

Yep, the rope trick worked perfect for getting the nuts off but both clutches and both flywheels are stuck on. Going to try the rubber mallet thing shortly.

Run it the same as your other saws, it will be fine. The key isn't what amount of oil in the mix, its oil in the mix.

Yep. 40/1 will be fine with good quality gas and oil. Running good, fresh, ethanol-free gas and high quality oil (I run synthetics) is more important that that extra .8oz of oil per gallon (going from 3.2oz/gal for 40/1 to 4oz/gal for 32/1).

That a cool little Homelite. I like that stove you built dude, makes me want to build one every time I see it.

Oh they're absolute crap. Junk I tell you. Useless. Nobody wants them, because they're big, heavy, loud, and more powerful than needed. Send it to me for orderly disposal. I'll pay for shipping to ease your burden...:msp_biggrin:

Seriously though. That's a classic for sure. Similar to my 900D. Little bit less displacement. Let me know if you don't want it...

Thanks. It looks good, but needs a piston and maybe a cylinder.......so it will be a while before it speaks again. Good long term 'project' to be sure, and I'm glad to have it.

A 9-23 that went for $25???? How the F did I miss that? Gotta refine my searching skills a bit. Did you see the calculator? Four bucks? I'd like to see 'em fit it in a 'flat rate box' like his listing states...

Something's funny there. That saw's worth more than that in parts, even with the funky B&S 'custom' muffler setup and the missing cylinder cover. Even has a nice looking 24-28" bar and chain on it. Let me guess..........you was waitin' for him to list it for $20 tomorrow....

If I saw that I would have snagged it in a heartbeat. Whatchawannabet that he relists the saw, claiming some kind of error with the shipping? I need to stop looking at that listing. It's making me sick...

I figured. Don't kick yourself too much. They come along from time to time. If if makes you feel any better.........................pistons and cylinders for those saws are rare and expensive (although a 9-23/9-26 slug did just sell on feebay a couple of weeks ago). You'd have bought a nice looking money pit if the saw needed internals. Having said that..................I'm not selling my 900D!!!
