Had a Stihl rep call this week and relay they had been playing with the tune of the 201 T and at least in the Midwest a tech update will prolly come out.
They took a 7" oak log and cut with a new old stock 200T cut time was aroung 6. something secs, don't recall the exact time.
New 201 T out of the box took 10. something seconds
After the techs/germans played with the carb setting which are the H needle out against the limiter and the L screw out 1 5/8 turns the 201T beat the cut time of the new old stock 200T. We were told to call anyone we have sold the 201T's to and retune. We tried it in wood at out dealer and it does in fact work, we did not have a new 200T, but one in good shape.

Just reading between the lines Stihl is taking very seriously, I wouldn't doubt if you don't see a CM version pretty quick or even a "I" model (fuel injected coming down the pike pdq. They are committed to producing the hottest performing top handle on the market, they are not going to let that position slip.

Any idea how far out the H screw is when it hits the stop?

Thanks for the info, I have two new 201s at work that are stock. I will try your tuning method tomorrow and report back. My two are modified but maybe I'll even play around some more on those ones as well. Although there's no limiters on mine. Thanks again.

They need to do the "Snellerized" tune. Tune it in the wood....nuff said.

I find it very interesting that a company like Stihl would not test the new model against the old model before the new one was released. It is a shame they had to perform this test after the new model had been out over a year. I know the the main company I rep when they bring a new model out it is USUALLY an improvement over the old model.

I'm wondering where the L is from the factory. Too much L significantly hurts throttle response on the 201. I'm wondering if they're compensating for a lean H by over richening the L.

What ever they do with the current version won't beat mine.

Honestly, I'm sure they realize that they have screwed up. They're trying to figure out how to fix it now. It really is a shame, considering how good they can run, with very little work.

Thanks for the info Mr Springs, I will play around with mine a bit more and see how it runs.

I am glad Stihl finally figured out that the factory 201T is slower than the 200T... I mean with all of engineers they employ especially their test engineers, how hard can it be... seriously?? It's not the first time the have built and tested a saw. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

All they have to do is call you!! Mine is perfect In all weather to date.

Reason i believe it is like this. I have a FS 36 Stihl Trimmer. She was about entry level homeowner style in 1998. I did a few mods, but even before, when you hit the sweet spot in the carb settings, it was good all year and a whole different beast. I think the MS201 T is good, now. Can only get better. I'm glad they found it with the limiters on.
