There's a hardware store somewhat near me that has a late production SXL-AO just like that (with the Zama carb). They've had it on display since 1994 or so when it was produced. It has a good layer of shelf dust, and is sitting next to an NOS Homelite 240. They have the SXL-AO priced at $399.95 and the 240 set at $299.95. About two years ago I asked if they'd negotiate on the price of the SXL-AO. No dice. If you want to try your luck with them PM me and I'll give you the contact info...
NOS spikes are around $15 or so IIRC. If a fellow had an NOS or near-NOS saw, then that'd be the way to 'complete' it.
That is a better deal. Judging by his description (specifically the time frame of the original purchase) and not seeing the saw, I'd say that it's much more likely that the saw is one of the "Ol Blue" or "Limited Edition" SXL-AO's that are painted a different blue than the old blue/white saws. Here are two listings for the saws I'm talking about.

On that 2nd saw you can see the different shades of blue because they swapped on a clutch cover from an older blue/white model. The older color is most visible (in their pics) in the bar stud area.

That's Oregon 72V Vanguard chain. The depth gauges are 'bent over' like that. Makes filing them a PITA. It's a 'reduced kickback' chain...
Now why did I read "chainbrake" in your post the first time I read it? My mind's playing tricks on me (got a migraine headache today..............and I've had strange things happen with those). Reread your post (after I posted) and saw that you were talking about the chain. Edited my response...

I really do hope that saw goes unsold.
I can't see anyone paying $2,000 much less what he is asking. If he gets it must be worth it to someone but I can't imagine it ever being worth that kind of coin

Those saws are actually made to cut either one man or two man. Pop off the quick release helper and you really need the dogs to cut.
Those home made dogs are kinda lame and I would rather have a nice original or a Hadstone claw in stead.
As far as the color choice maybe the guy had a fire truck to mount it on. :msp_biggrin:
If that saw has a rotating powerhead the spikes would be a leverage point when felling for the helper position
