Great condition....and I take it you have been happy with it's reliability.....
Btw...I lived in CO. for 20 years and my last job there, I was responsible for WY....but I am not sure where Carpenter Wy is?
Wish I had never left the west.....oh well...

ps....you must have used a "duster" to clean that thing after all that cutting....lol...looks good

Well bow I always wipe down and blow out the saw with an air compressor after use.

Carpenter Wyoming is 35 miles south east of Cheyenne and is about 25 miles from Nebraska.

Good Morning: It seems I have some time to play with a 3400 that I was able to get from a friend. I intend to put in some new rings, eliminate the base gasket, advance timing with the penny in the keyway trick, clean up the ports, and a muffler mod. Is there anything else you guys would suggest for a low dollar, low talent kind of update?
Is there a good source for rings? Advance timing by turning the flywheel counterclockwise?

You can smooth out the inside of the plastic intake. Fly wheel CCW for advanced. Match the input to the muffler to the exhaust Port of the cylinder. Take about .010" off the base of the cylinder by sanding it on a very flat surface.

Groundhogs.....Not nearly as many as there used to be. I kinda like old school guns too. The old Remington 700 BDL in .22-250 is about as reliable as a old Poulan. Gregg,

Nice setup. I have a 700VSF bolt, (223) that I glass bed the receiver, and then did some trigger work. Have a 5x20x50 scope on it and it shoots 3/4" groups at 200yds...at least when I was doing a lot of hand loading and shooting. I use to live in CO. and did a lot of bench/load work, and then we would go out and shoot Prairie Dogs. Hundreds of rounds per day...easy....they are smaller than Ground Hogs, but just as much fun. I just never got back into it when I moved to Ohio.

When you hit a groundhog with a 60 grain Federal premium hollow point from a .243 @ what, 3650 or so fps, it smokes them instantly.

LOL....
I had a few prairie dogs flip up into the air what looked like 4-5 ft.....
243 is a great gun and works nicely on the coyotes in Ohio.
I went with the .223 because when shooting P dogs, I have had to stop and let the barrel cool....just to many shoots...
You would burn out a 250 or 243 a lot faster out west....

Every thing was looking nice until I pulled the muffler, it has been run lean. Good thing I have a few laying around that could use the parts.

Nice find Jim! even if the internals are sick. I'm envious of you west coast guys..You seem to come across 5400's, 8500's with some regularity. About all ya find around here are WildThings & Woodsharks. On a rare occasion, a 3400 or 306.

That reminds me of a big male groundhog I shot probably 20 years ago. Only time I have ever seen it, I guess the sun was just right, late in the day, behind my target. Hit him with a 50 gr. TNT hollow point, had to load those to 3000ft sec. max. But when it hit him, there was a rather large red mist in the air. A friend of mine was there to see it also, through binos. Later I found a varmint hunters web site that was called "Seekers of the red Mist" LOL I new then what they were talkin about.
