Well they made a dog's breakfast out of that. Would of been easier just to shoot him through the window he kept going to. Probably woulda helped if the justice system had of done something previously, he had a list of charges a mile long. I think it's safe to say this country is in big trouble after that little episode! Lone nutjob that would have done the same regardless of Aus' military involvement in dust-bowls offshore?

Do we know if the hostage taker fired the first shot, at people trying to escape, at which point there was only one way it was going to play out, or whether the AOS (or whoever they were) had already decided it was not ever going to end well and they seized a chance to take him out as he moved hostages to another part of the building, all but conceding that risking a few lives is the best of bad options?

*edit*
Police raided the Lindt Chocolat Cafe after they heard a number of gunshots from inside, said New South Wales state police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

"They made the call because they believed that at that time, if they didn't enter, there would have been many more lives lost,"

At that point, it's hard not to agree but just how many opportunities to take him out prior to that point were allowed to slide by? Any?

So they can burn more powder for f all gain in velocity ?
like daz said ,not exactly f'all but its more to do with how much energy(hitting power it carries ,which is where the smaller round lacks at distance,

bit disappointing really after watching this unfold on telly ,I mean really all day with no resolve ,geez, briz just had the g20 and the amount of ADF and whatever else they had was just friggin bulzshit and all that was for foreign dips ,we have our own people and a major city held up and yep all they wanna do is talk it down

Are you saying that in this case time increased the odds of harm to the hostages? How can we be sure of that?
several reporters got a good look at him so you can't tell me the snipers didn't. my guess is they were not given the ok to shoot. sure he may have had a bomb but this was never going to end with him coming out alive anyway, you could tell that at the start. all it shows to other would be terrorists is that we'll ***** foot around and give you all the time you need to get your plan together!

Trying to save all and have no casualties is a waste of time. Trying too hard to look good. Just get in there and sort it out.
Go in all guns blazing results in more casualtys , get it done with a sniper maybe yes , but first the intel is needed if bombs are riged and many other hurdels to jump when number of hostages is unknown, and nutjobs intention unknown and how armed he is with explosives and what not ... I think the nsw police did a good job personally. Limited casualty and target taken out.

I agree with you Kain, but the whole bloody system is wrong. The system allows these parasites to slip through, crist the taxing folk even feed and pay for medical for the f#ckers. This bloke should n't of even been on the street to start with.
You feel for the poor folk caught up in it tho.

I'd rather set chokers in Winter than have to tell the genuine, hard-working, peaceful refugees and immigrants apart from the nutters and axe-grinders (potential or currently).

A worrying thing, if I have read the report right, is that this guy had form, was on multiple and serious charges and was out on bail and could still do this. Makes you wonder how many others of higher risk they were watching instead, and how many like this guy are slipping through the net.

The whole legal system and gov policy and judges is where the problem is... the police can only do so much and I think they do a great job with there hands tied by pencil pushers

wasn't knocking the police on the ground at all. i think they did a great job as well. just a shame about all the red tape i'm sure they had to deal with.

im shore they would of if he steeped foot out the door and it was a clear shot without putting hostage at risk, shooting threw glass is a whole other ball game when hostages are in the close vicinity.

G'day guys, not a proper aussie but I live here now and married one, neice and nephew are proper aussies though. Thought I'd best join in anyway.
