My running mate is die-hard Stihl. He is sending an 066 crank off to be stroked and also an 044, I think.

We'll find out if they can hang in the stock appearing classes.

You and him ought to get together and bash Husky some time. LOL

So.. does a true woods ported 361 have any chance of making a decent showing in a stock appearing race if it's running race chain? I'm not talking winning but just not embarrassing the owner.

Ian

With the right chain it can win a few shows with the right operator. Not major shows, but shows

1. Chain
2. Saw
3. Operator.

Need at least two of the three to do Okay.

Alot of the County fair style shows don't know any more about saws than you do. No offense.

Fred

None taken. I don't know much, but that little bit is volumes compared to what I knew when I arrived here a few months ago. :D

If people want I'll take some pics of the inside and share with everyone.
Please do.:rockn:
I have a 5000 that will smoke a stock 066, but it's a racer
Redmax 5000?
If so I would like to see a 5000 make 20 consecutive cuts in 18'' white oak or sugur maple using round ground chain faster than a 066.
Now if your cutting 12'' basswood or the like its possible the 5000 could win. I suppose you could set the 660 for small wood and still smoke the 5000 if you could find a sprocket big enough.

Partner 5000.

Yeah, you don't race your worksaws and I don't work my race saws. 10x10 HARD yellow pine.

Bigger sprocket and the 066 still won't win.

I think I've got a deal worked out on a 361 but I'm still not decided on my woods porter. I'm inclined to send it to Big Dave since he's just one state north of here in Michigan. But all the positive comments on Ed and Dean don't make this decision any easier. Everybody talks about how Dean builds such a torquey saw, and that's what I want. I hear Ed is swamped keeping loggers and the like outfitted with ported saws and has done a lot of 361s with good results. If he's that busy, he must be good. And then, how can you argue with the long time success Big Dave has had. You don't keep a reputation like he has over the years by building slouchy saws. And I know what all you addicts are thinking. NO, I'M NOT GOING TO HAVE EACH OF THEM BUILD ME A SAW!!:hmm3grin2orange:  :biggrinbounce2:

I exchanged quite a few emails with the guy advertising the 361 on Craigslist for $350. He even sent me a PayPal email address to make payment to. I asked for pics last night and never heard from him all day today. He also gave some very conflicting info to a couple other users here. I figure I've had enough problems with bad transactions on the MS 440 I bought, so I'm forgetting that saw. Instead, I bought the one month old 361 from Curt Bailey. I just paid for it and hope to have it soon.

Let's see some pictures, Fred! A 5000 pipe saw sounds kinda cool - I like the idea of a race saw that everyone is not used to seeing!

No Pipe.

A few years back Jonsered had a deal where they would give you $100 toward the purchase of a new saw if you brang a saw in on trade, runing or not. A uncle of mine traded of his Partner 5000 that looked a bit rough cosmeticly, but didnt have more than 50 hours on it. It in fact spent most of its time banging around the back of his pickup.

I'm considering buying a MS 361 and having it woods ported. This saw will wear a 20" bar with round-ground flat-top chisel chain. It will be used for firewood cutting. I will likely never sell this saw and will keep it clean and well maintained. I'm a Tim Allen kind of guy. You can't have too much power! I want it to have a broad powerband and be capable of pulling a longer bar if necessary, though that will be rare. I will use Premium gas with 40:1 MX2T. What all do I want done to it? Where do you recommend I have this saw built? I'm not looking for a finicky race saw. I want a builder that has a solid reputation building work saws and doesn't mind a curious/inquisitive customer. I like to understand what's being done. I'm quite particular and want a builder that I can trust.

Curious as to which porter you ended up getting your 361 ported by, and what was the outcome?? I recently picked up a 361 and I'm wondering if you could make a recommendation??

I love seeing insanely old threads pulled to the front page. I've never seen 10 year old threads pulled up on other sites. +1

One of my favorite truck forums locks threads that are more than a year without responses. You can still search for them, and read them, but they don't show up on the front page again.
