This looks very good. The 3" PVC would be about right for squirrels. All the bottom T lengths (vertical and horizontal would only have to be a foot long and you could fasten it to the base of Mr. Squirrel's favorite tree. I believe it takes awhile for most rat poisons to do their work, so the squirrels will likely die elsewhere.

Worth a try in my book. The squirrels are completely overpopulated in my yard and are now tearing up my pin oak tree like gangbusters. I've carried out over two trash cans packed with green twigs and leaves that the squirrels have ripped off the tree.
Read the labels on rat poison like D-con. It is illegal to use it outdoors.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great idea but it is a prohibited use. Be aware of that before you do it.

The poison I use says 100 feet or less from a building, it takes several feedings to kill, and there is a antidote. I would stay away from the 1 time feeding kill. They do have mice poison for agricultural use that you spread like fertilizer, it's restricted use of course.. I still think a live trap or rat trap would work good, you'd probably have him in an hour.

Al:

Squirrel season starts in 7 days. Red or Fox Squirrels are the tree rats that are around here with a few Piney's in the mix, but the Piney's are too small to mess with. The Reds are a bugger to skin, and I've tried every method that I've been able to find. Best one is cutting around the mid section, putting each hind foot in a piece of rope nailed to a tree/post and pulling down. Once the skin is up to the head on the front half, turn the squirrel around and hang it from it's head, pulling the skin off of the lower 1/2 of the squirrel.

Any recipes you have would be appreciated. A client has them chewing on anything plastic on his 80 acres, and since he doesn't hunt he wants me to get serious about thinning the herd.

Same bag limit/possession here as you have.

View attachment 439415 I use these for moles..use bigger pvc for squirrels. Dump poison in the top,put a cap on it. Cats , dogs, etc shouldn't be able to get at it. I think I would use a rat trap or live trap for a squirrel. Then you know you got him.

Hey Shawn,

Are you talking moles or voles? Fruit trees and voles are a bad combo.

(Working on ordering a new variety today, B51)

One of those tree huggers that thinks squirrels are cute cuddly critters that don't bother any thing. Same type that whined pleaded and what not for the reintroduction of wolves.
But don't put them in my city, county park or in the wild near by.
Put them near ranches and in less populated places Like Michigan's UP.

Here is a link to skinning squirrel the easy way but I don't do the wet down. I wash them after the skinning with cold clear tap water at the outside hydron.

Here are some videos.

I my self run a slit down the belly with a gut hook knife or utility knife with a hooked blade.
PM me a Email address and I will set you up with a bunch of squirrel recipes.

Here is one to start with.

BAKED SQUIRREL
2 squirrels, cut up into pieces
1 1/2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1/2 c. cooking oil
2 onions, sliced in rings
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1/2 c. green onion and parsley
Coat squirrel pieces with flour seasoned with salts and pepper. Brown in oil and remove from skillet. Line baking dish with foil and place squirrel in dish. Add onion, garlic, and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
Blend soup with a small amount of water; pour over squirrel. Seal foil tightly. Bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours. Open foil and add green onions and parsley. Reseal and cook for 15 minutes longer.

I usually cut of the feet then cut the hide across the back and pull the pieces down over the head and tail cut of the head at the neck. Split the pelvis and pull the guts down cut off the tail, skin and guts together. I don't think you can beat pan fried squirrel quarters.

My battle with our many squirrels continues over the bird feeders.
I have Grey , Red, and Black squirrels. The Reds are very vocal and will throw nuts and pine cones on your head if you stand underneath them.
I am putting Vaseline on the poles every few days to keep them from quickly emptying my bird seed.
It's working, but after every rain you need to reapply.
They've even started to chew off the aluminum shields that i made.
I need to get those hats for the poles so the cant climb them, or make my own.
The Chipmunks are so so darn destructive here too. I have lots. They dig holes all through the lawns, drop and chew up all the apples on the trees and even eat the flower buds before they can bloom.
Even had them scurrying in the attic at times.
I need to trap them to relocate. (Wife wont let me shoot or poison them)

Marine,

My battle with squirrels is non stop.

I really thin them out in the spring. I have 2 grays left, 1 red, and no idea how many chipmunks.

The dog does a good job keeping them thinned also on his own.

I leave the one red squirrel because it's the best baby sitter EVER!!!

Clint will stay like this for hours arguing back and forth with the red squirrel.

I'm not a fan of poisoning due to the fact you have to dispose of the poisoned vermin instead of just hucking it out in the woods and letting natures trash men do their thing.

You could always permanently relocate them when the wife isn't home.

What is it with the wives of you guys. Squirrels in the attic, eating up all the bird food, destroying things around the house and wifie WON'T LET YOU DEAL WITH THEM.
Now if it were me I would let wifie deal with fixing every thing they trash and make her spend her make up money on the bird feed.
