@blsnelling keep in mind those generac standby gensets will auto cycle once a week to charge the battery up. And if they ever kick on you can easily expect to have a $400 gas bill for 5-7 days of continuous run time but man are they life savers. My dad has had one for close to 10 yrs. only needed it a few times but a week without power in the middle of summer is miserable. with standby power he continued to take hot showers, watch tv, enjoy central air, and saved 2 freezers full of food.

my mom, aunt, and me are too cheap to install one so we drug a single 5k generator around to 3 different houses to keep the freezers cold and my moms fish alive when we had power outages. this summer though i added a 6000, 3500, and a 1500 generator set to our arsenal so no more dragging the generator around to each house but of course we all know how that goes....finally have plenty of generators but the power stays on

Had this sweet old 076 super on my bench today for inspection for a potential buyer. He made a very wise choice by doing so...The piston was in the beginning stage of failure from ingesting large amounts of fine dust from a hole in the filter flocking. Now he can either pass on the deal or pay an appropriate price and have it fixed.

MS660, sheared flywheel key. Looks like previous owner stripped the threads on the nut so I went down to my friendly Stihl dealer and he happily sold me the wrong one. After about an hour or so of sorting I found one in my shop. New key and nut and tightened it the best I could, hopefully that fixed the problem. I know that thing kicks so much while trying to start it that I wouldn't want it.

Weather's turning nicer out so I think I'll disassemble my MS290. The saw looks great on the outside but unfortunately the previous owner apparently didn't know you had to put oil in the gas. I'm hoping all it needs is a piston but I'll soon see..

When we were without power for 10 days when Hurricane Ike blew through the Dayton area in 2008, we ran a small 3500 watt generator to keep things cool. It was enough to power the fridge/freezers, battery charger, cell phone chargers, fans, some lights, plus the all-important coffee maker. I also had a camp stove & propane burner outside for cooking.

Since then, I've added another small 4KW gas generator as a backup to our backup generator. Electrical power is a good thing!

we are lucky enough to have free gas so water stays warm, stove works with no power....stove is enough to keep the kitchen and living room warm in the winter if power goes out but we would still be devastated with no electrical backup....freezers are our main concern because right now we have almost 600 pounds of beef packed into the 3 freezers

Had one of those days today. installed bearings and crank in one case half, walked back in the office to get the gasket set while the other case was heating up, no gaskets. shipped out my last gasket set this morning and had already sent my order in for the day so i guess this project gets put on hold till Tuesday.

Grrrrrr!

Poulan PP4620AVX

Don't have pictures but this saws been with me so long and cut so much wood.
I can't toss it out because a recoil spring break.

I have a new(er) bar and fresh chain on it.
Nicely cleaned and on backup for the Sthil and Husqvarna.

I know most won't mess with a Poulan. And normally I wouldn't either.
But this has done me good.

Luckily, our outage happened in September when it wasn't too hot or too cold.

After the outage, I bought a propane outdoor water heater "just to have", since we ended up heating water in 3 gal containers over the propane burner for baths & such.

For anybody thinking about using baby gas powered generators for backup power, have some stabilized gas set aside. I store a decent amount in STEEL 5 gal Jerry cans. Most plastic jugs allow oxygen to leak through the plastic, shortening shelf life of the fuel. I've used 2-3 year old gas stabilized with PRI-G without any problem.

I also like the Kill-a-Watt meter for balancing loads on different extension cord runs from the generator. It's cheap, and tells you exactly how many watts a small appliance (such as freezer) pulls. See: http://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU

This is. I also modded a MS201T and MS150TC as well.

I recently got a donor 394 so I could fix the one with the bad big end bearing.. spent hours washing it,.. it had run used diesel engine oil for bar oil.. damn that stuff was black, and *everywhere*. Piston could have been replaced, but for now I'll run it as is.. sounds really snappy (I widened the ports, raised the exhaust about as much as I dropped the cylinder)

They are good saws once some of the weaknesses are dealt with (engine mounting bolts back out, A/V springs break, carb mount leaks, etc.). They are light and make good power, especially with a muffler mod. Here are some shots of an improved carb mount plate I made for mine:

My bench just got a "Wild Thing" :chainsaw::wtf:
Guy says it "don't run good".... compared to??? Should be interesting.
