So once the local stores get their spring shipment I am thinking about getting a DHT, probably the 27T model.

Talk me into or out of this. Or anything/anyone else I should be looking at? I have used that model in the past and know DHT stands behind their work so that is why I am leaning towards them.

I have confirmed with DHT that I can swap to high speed axles.

Also do they still offer the 4 way bolt on head?

DHT is a good choice. My FIL bought one I used it a few times and bought my own. If the 27 ton had a different motor than the 22 ton I would have went with the 27. The 22 ton has split everything I have put on it. I have no complaints or regrets with my choice.

the 22 T will do all you need svk. it's a tad bit faster than the 27T. have used my buddies and it works just fine. i was at our lowes store today and looked like they were sold out. all they had were troybuilt splitters. for around $1,000 ya can't go wrong. and from what iv'e read here they seem to be on top of any problems. nomad_archer bought one and i think he really likes it.

I've got the 22 ton model. If you look back at some of me old posts I believe I have some pics of some 40 inch oak I split. My buddy has a 30 ton Northstar which no doubt has more power. What we've found is the speed of my machine over his makes it the preferred machine we use. Have had zero problems out of it starts and splits just about anything. The way I look at it is if it won't split it you probably won't wanna use it for firewood cause it's gonna be a mangled mess.

Given their track record on the forum here and all the anecdotals and reviews they seem pretty good. One of those or for more bucks a logboss, which is really slick designed.

I couldn't be happier with our 27 ton DHT. We also have the 4-way. Takes a second to switch between the single wedge and 4-way. The nice thing with both, is the adjustable height. We had a hiccup with the first 4-way and right away the company made it right with a new assembly.

I have looked at the DHT splitters and they look like nice units. If I was in the market they would probably be my first choice. I currently have a 22T Brave that has served me well for over 10 years. Its never failed to split anything I threw at it, so for me personally the 27T would be over kill.

Those mangled mess' burn just fine in my stove, and in fact, many times last longer in the stove than the "cutsie" wood many on here like,,, lol

I picture you with a supersplit. Seems to be a perfect fit for your personality, work ethic, and wood species. I think you would get bored with the hydro and go back to hand splitting.

Well I think one would be awesome but I just cannot justify that kind of expense.

I have a couple of ins to get a discount locally on a DHT plus I have several cords of gnarly yard trees stocked up that would make hand splitting quite a chore.

I'll still go mano e mano armed with the S2800 against the straight grained stuff. But now I can open up my scrounging to larger knotty pine without needing to noodle too.

East coast baby oak everywhere!!! I want maximum weight per load not wow that knotty piece burned thirty minutes longer than that straight one. You can't fit as many knotty ones as straight so cut total load weight which in my stove equals longer burn times. Now if your the kinda guy who likes throwing wood in the stove every couple hours more power to you. I'm a load it tight come back 18-24 hours later.

heck steve, the one we used last spring was a champ! not sure if that one was a 22 or 27 ton? it seemed to handle everything we pushed through it! if my old duerr ever wears out i will be following your lead. please keep us informed on your choice....

That was a 27T. Due to "woman problems" on the owner's end I no longer have access to borrow that one.

ie not going to get a $3000 quality splitter for $1000.
True.

However some of the knock off splitters use cheaper components rather than components made to order like DHT does. I'm told they go to great lengths to ensure a quality product. I know the guys who have had issues come up with a DHT product have been treated very well by the company.
