Hey everyone,

Looking at rebuilding a flat top 066. It is going to require new bearings, crank, piston and cylinder. The saw has sentimental value to me, and always ran awesome. My concern is that the case halves are in tough shape. Saw looks to never have been rebuilt, but attached is a pic of the wear from the crank. How can I best inspect each case half to make sure a rebuild is worth is, and will last?

Also, the piston is done for bit the cylinder looks okay. Any thoughts? Can I just install a new stihl piston?

I would run the heck out of thst jug. As far as the case was the bearing race tight in the case? Any galling evidence showing a bearing had spun?

The bearing race was tight, and definitely not spun. I'm thinking a meteor piston, NWP crank, not sure on bearings yet. Thanks for the reply.

Were the main bearings shot? What was wrong with the crank?

The case is salvageable. How deep is the wear? Hard to see on my phone... any damage near the mating surface?

OEM bearings and see what your dealer is at for an OEM piston. Meteors are great but look into oem first.

The crank was the issue from the beginning. Saw ran great, shut it off one day. Went to start it a few hours later and you could tell something was wrong. Where the connecting rod mates to the crank there was lots of vertical play. The wear isn't deepe enough to disturb the integrity. The mating surfaces of the two halves have a few small gouges. I'm think some very light rtv could fix those?

The bearings are already out and the crank is in the trash pile. I think I have enough direction here to go ahead and order the parts. Thanks

So the saw has a "digital" decal but no red light or even the hole knocked out for a red light. The serial number is attached. I'm worried I'll order the wrong parts. Sounds like the early crankshafts are different than late model. The crankshaft part number is attached too. I called Stihl a few years ago and they told me the saw mas manufactured in either 92 or 94 I can't remember.

Looks like a worthy project. I'll be watching your progress if you care to keep us updated. I have a similar pending project of the same size.

That's a very helpful PDF. thank you. I'm struggling to find a 1122 030 0407 crankshaft. Just a couple Chinese ones on eBay. Looks like NWP no longer makes this crank? Any suggestions on a quality aftermarket early style crank or is it oem or eBay Chinese?

Sorry i feel like im missing something. You said there was radial play on the con-rod bearing right? The pic of the wear in the crankcase would be from the crank lobe, not the con-rod, which would suggest that the main bearings were bad and not the crank. Could be that main bearings and con-rod bearings are both shot. Just curious. Looks like a very worthy project.

The bearings will be replaced because there clearly looks to be an issue caused by wear. Although the crank bearings felt tight and smooth. There is zero mistaking the issue that caused the saw to quit running is the vertical play in the connecting rod bearing. It's really bad.

Have you looked for a good used crank here or on ebay? If you have a large Stihl dealer, that does a lot of repairs, check with them. Husky dealer here has many Stihl saws in his back room.

Haven't used or heard of Oregon cranks. Try contacting seller?
I'd go good, used OEM crank here, man. Get it from a well-known member.

Al flywheel, nice.
