Well there you have it. My logger buddies couldn't identify a round either when I brought them a sample round of each either. If they saw the whole tree it would be a different matter.

I am now calling it "Mystery Wood", and it will be made into campfire wood.

I've got a sunburst honey locust in my yard. It has very tight smooth bark. It is very dense too unlike this.

Two questions.

Was this cut near a yard? The grocery store by my grandparents home used to give out all kinds of strange seedlings and this could be one of those grown up.

Secondly what did the splits smell like?

Yes sir. Lots. Honey locust is yellow with pinkish heart Wood. The grain and bark are both wrong

I've cut a few Chinese Chestnut trees. The Wood splits easier than oak the grain looks similar to this. But, it's heavy but he says it's light. What about what I think is the white walnut in the first split piece?

If it's really light and easy to cut, I say it is butternut also.

i had to google it and this is what i got.

we have that wood here but i don't know what it is. very light when dry.splits easy. i'll ask my 85 year old dad but he will probably give me some kind of old farmer name that won't help.
