Are there any big bore kits or upgrades for this saw?
I pulled mine down last night and it really needs a rebuild. I wouldnt mind going a bit silly on this saw
 
What sort of machine work?
Cutting the squishband and adjusting squish with a base cut.

Polishing and moving some ports, but the factory timing is pretty darn good.

Just removing the base gasket may not be healthy for the saw. My factory saw had .034 squish with an .030 gasket. Nearly a headslapper without a gasket. You could always make a thinner gasket though.
 
OEM top ends for the 262 have been NLA for about a year now., so always be careful grinding on them. Aftermarket kits are limited and very hit and miss. And not everyone has the ability or desire to do extensive machine work tp get something to run better.

@drf255 is correct about not deleting the gasket on 262's. But there are 2 gaskets available and using the thinner of the 2 gives a little extra compression.

Edit: Thin gasket number is 503704801. Use it on 254 and 257 as well as on the 262.

I think you are mistaken on #. I believe 503704801 is the thick (1mm)gasket for 257,261(according to Bailey's)

I bought 503704802, thinking it is the thin(0.5mm) gasket, but havent calipered or used it. (Bailey's calls it out for 262). It "should" be the thin.

Someone may know better than I.
 
Cascade Im about to buy that gasket.
Any chance i can get you to confirm its thickness before i order it?
 
It won't be for another 5-6 hours when I get home from work. Googling the two seems that what I said is correct, hopefully someone else can verify.

I started porting the cylinder last night. I have to now match the intake and exhaust manifolds and she is done. I think i might make a expansion chamber for this beastie!
Ps it was given to me by a friend as a going saw in need of a freshen up.
The crankshaft and main bearings are good so i am replacing the following,
Piston
Rings
Small end bearing
Base gasket with thin one
Main seals.
i cant think of anything else

I concur.

I looked at my gasket, and its much thicker than 5 pieces of paper (0.5 mm).

Dang, looks like it'll go in the trash and I buy a new correct one. Or anyone can PM me their address and you can have a free 1 mm in the mail.


That's what I get for questioning one of the masters on this site...I just thought that with Bailey's and also the guy who wrote the 80 page 261 to 262xp conversion manual on my side I was being helpful.

Just saw a 262xp on eBay for sale. It had a stihl 038 magnum piston and cylinder and muffler. They both have the same piston stroke. The saw looks original except for the muffler

I saw that too. I think I would have made the effort to somehow use the 262xp muffler.
