Should I reseal these welch? Plugs in the block prior to paint and reassembly? Maybe a coat of JB weld or similar is in order. The center one seems raised, although not loose, makes me a bit nervous.

So should I seal them? Or not worry about it? None of my other saws have them.

If you have any doubts about it in any way, you should reseal them. It is a lot easier now than later.

Brian
Do you have any more advice? Like what to seal them with? I was thinking JB weld or a similar epoxy type product.

Took the 800 and 700 out for a few tanks in some very hard dead old blue gum. Really love the noise out of the pm700 such a awesome sound and kinda prefer it over the antivibe feel of the 82cc it just has a nice direct feel to it. Got the sissy valve working too thanks guys:)20180902_090241.jpg 20180902_091901.jpg 20180902_084941.jpg

I see what you guys mean about yellow fever i cant get enough of them still workin on the guy with a nice old 250 I'll get it 1 day. But yea it was a wee 310 that infected me took along time to find some proper macs but never gave up. I have a box full of those wee pests and a 10-10 waiting for some lil bits n bobs and now the shed is very yellow haha my poor wife the 2 year old has the cad too

The first saw i ever remember was one of the loudest saws ive ever heard. A 1957 mcculloch 55. It scared my dad so he got a mini mac 35. Ive still got the 55. Along with my own first mcculloch a sp81. After i rebuilt that saw it was game on, i now have several macs including a 700 and 800 also. That 700 is one of my favorites also. Your 800 is looking great jethro. I enjoy your pictures and posts...keep sharing young man..haha

Hey there Vinny thanks for that means alot:) wish i could get out there more and put more stuff on here but time is allways short same boat for you too no doubt. I had to google the 55 what a beast do ya ever use it? He must have bin scared to step down to a wee mini haha great lil saws to use though when there running.

Thanks again for that starter its doing what it was made for and should be for many years yet a long way from home.I like the sticker on it i had to look up the shop and yup still going still the same ph number even. Mite be due for some av mounts in the neerish future but other wise is running great heaps of grunt and nice fat wide grunt too not revy and stally.

Something about that 700 its a really nice saw a little nicer to throw around than the 800 a 7-10 would be cool too but im not picky it was free from a scrap bin after all haha going to put a piston in it when i find some spare coin. It still pulls a 20inch threw gum well but is getting tired and want that jug to last.
Hows that 125 getting on? 1 of those would have been great today.

That looks fun Mark. Such a simple saw to work on. My mates ms311 had a fuel leak n we pulled off the cover n went ummm na f that n took it to the shop haha although i have no passion or interest in that kind of saw n couldnt really be botherd. Its a pleasure to pull these 10 series apart have never tried an earlier model though but must be same or better.

Hey Mark how many macs are you short of the whole set? Ive been reading the thread way back in the page 300s watching you slowly tick them all off

More teardown and cleaning, got the gear case disassembled and removed. Found the idler gear spider broken and the gear beat the crap out of the case flopping around. I have a friend that is a pro welder, gonna see if he can do something for it. Also has a wallowed out bolt hole that bolts the gear case to the engine. Gonna either need a helicoil or an oversize bolt.

What does one use for gear lube in these? I was thinking hyoid gear oil but it had what looked more like grease in it.

Jethro, the 55 was bought at a farm auction by the ol man. Pretty cheap id suspect. So it got pinched by a log while buckingvat drove backwards. Gear drive, slow and steady. I use it yes. Not alot though. 28" bar at 30lbs its for fun only. He then afforded the mini mac after that. 1 income and 6 kids, a local dealer so its what it was. In the 80s he got the echo 400evl. Still a good saw. Ill have it one day also.
The 125 is still waiting a cover, no replies yet on that. Im still looking though. Eventually ill get the cover. Thanks for sayin hi. Have a good week

Yea i wouldn't want to be behind a gear drive when the chain has been stalled cos its cumming out at you haha glad it still see's wood though. Yea 6 kids you guys would have gobbled a fair bit of tucker haha. Echos are underrated really i think there good solid saws. Is there any other covers that can fit or be made to fit?

If you are bucking with a gear drive and the kerf starts to close just throttle up and step aside, the saw will spit itself out.

Vinny - if you are looking for a clutch cover for a CP/SP125 I have a number of damaged covers, perhaps you could affect repairs on one. Send a PM if you are interested and I can supply some photos.

Jethro - I enjoy working on the 10 Series saws but there are more pieces & screws to keep track of that the Mini Mac models.

Mark
