I got in a Stihl 036 today that was one of these I don't know why it won't run but it's not locked up deals.
The crankshaft is broke in the threads where the clutch is attached. I see some complete crankcases on eBay and also crankshafts. Would I be better offf to break this in half and start over, keeping in mind that I have never done it before? Or, take a chance that the bearings and seals in the used crankcase are good? I have replaced pistons and cylinders ,but that is as far as I have gotten.Randy

Be careful buying complete bottom ends on E-bay. They may look good in picture and spin nice by hand. However, running is a complete different story.

Last month I bought a 272 case for a similar reason as yours. The cas spun nice by hand looked clean. I washed the case out with mix, then assembled my cylinder and piston. After completing assembly I fired the saw up. The crank bearings were screaming then the saw started rapping and stall. Total run time was 5-10 seconds before it stalled.

Could not re-start the saw as it then had no compression. Upon dis-assembly I found a nice piece of metal on top of the piston.

So, be careful and ask the seller alot of questions about the case he is selling.

Over all I think you are better off buying a used crank, new bearings and seals for your case. When you are finished you will know what you have.

Or better yet, cut you're losses and get another 036. Save this one for parts if the platic and tank are good, maybe get one with a broken gas tank etc. and use the parts on this one to fix it up?
I'm not sure how mechanichly inclined you are, but I've heard putting bearings in some of thes saws can be a real bear to do.

Epay has ruined me in the past. I'm real leary of anything sold there. Mostly its a dumping ground for worn out broken used sh** that they couldn't sell at the flee market because if the customer could examine the product first hand they would know what a piece of sh** it really is. And if that doesn't get ya the lost or damaged in shipping will!
There, thats my take on Epay!

You should see some of the stereo equipment I have bought.

But, when somebody who claims to know chainsaws sells one with a broken crank and doesn't put it in the description they are a rotten SOB in my book, parts saw or not.

I assume from your posts that you are clueless about seals and bearings.

Clueless might be a strong word here. I notice that you have all of 17 posts here, and Gary is a logger from the PNW with over 2000 posts, so I can safely say that yes he in fact does know about seals and bearings, but that is what should be obvious...

Back to your 036. You and I and many other people on here have posted about poor purchases that we have received from Ebay or Craigslist and asked for advice. To be honest, I understand why people get a little antsy when people keep posting the same thing over again about needing parts, or what could the problem be, etc.

In the future, I would recommend asking here on the forum if anyone has anyy roasted saws that need a rebuild, or someone they may know based oin reputation before parting ways with your hard earned money on Ebay.

036's are excellent saws, I use one as my primary saw still. BUT, that means I USE THE SAW AS MY PRIMARY SAW. That is a lot of work. Firewood is really hard on a saw as is logging. With that said, my saw is almost 10 years old. I bought it used as I couldn't afford a new one, and I was getting a bad case of CAD. Luckily it didn't need a lot of work, and I have run it like mad for the past 2 years.

I got burned on a Husky 2100 that everyone here was really helpful on. I will also say this, I wouldn't get into a pi##ing contest with anyone here about saws. People are very willing to help each other out here. If I needed parts for an 036, I would check out cheapstihlparts on Ebay. Bryce is a good man who has a TON of parts. Next time your CAD gets a little crazy, and you want a roasted saw, just make a post about it in the Trading Post. People WILL answer your request.

As a side note, if you paid over $150 I am sorry, but if you paid less than that just take a bunch of pictures of the parts, and part it out. You'll get it back.

Sorry for the long post,

Jason

Sorry about your loss. I just sold an excellant 036 pro for about three bills. Too bad I am gone from home for a couple months as I have a mint MS360 pro that I should sell because I don't use it. Get ahold of me in a month or two if you want a saw that looks and runs like new.

This is precisely what I was talking about. Just ask, and there are hundreds of people on here with "too many saws". I had to put that in quotes because no one can actually have "too many saws". I believe Ultra and Bill G can attest to that... (As can I according to my wife). Nice offer for next month...

So the saw has a few more problems than you had hoped.... do some reading, get creative and put some seals and bearings in it. They are great saws, I don't think you'll regret it. Lemonade from lemons, Baby!

Think of it as...uummm.... a fun project!

Oh, and Computeruser has a good point.... EBAY is unbeatable for parts and other busted stuff. Don't expect too much more, though.

Easy now killer

Jason

Isnt that the point of this site? I thought it was. I cut 100+ cord of wood a year and that doesn't mean I know jack about cranks and seals, I DON'T FOR YOUR INFO... I think you took it wrong, re-read Griff's post, he was asking which he'd be better off doing??? Not what to do. Either way, Gary's comment, although I thought it funny and made me laugh, could cause someone not knowing his sense of humor to think he was being a dikhed for no real reason other than lack of knowledge. If he's here he's trying to learn, thats more to say than alot of people that come here. He wasn't asking to buy a new saw either, THAT WAS ME THAT FREAK SOLD THE 036 TO FOR 3 BILLS!!!!! Nobody is forcing YOU or anyone else to read this post if it bothers you. I get your attitude every time I go to Mass or CT, maybe ya'll need to lighten up a bit and relax like PlantBiologist said. We're here to have fun. Sometimes if you've only got bad stuff to say your better to keep your mouth shut. If not, then you can just proceed with being miserable and spreading it to a bunch of people. I'm going to encourage that NOONE respond to stupid, vindictive posts. Now.... HOW BOUT AN ANSWER TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION GRIFF POSTED...

For your answer Griff, check the case for cracks, the bearings for play and wear. When Andy gets here you won't get an attitude and you'll get some of the best advice anybody could ask for...

 have a brew eh?

ON another note, EVERYBODY give the dude some rep eh? Come on. That's not how we welcome people here...

Thanks for all the non smartass responses.I am well aware of the hazards of eBay and if I didn't enjoy tinkering with the stuff I would buy a new one.

Does Bowtie wear one? Bet he's cute.

BTW, The seller emailed me back this A.M. and said he would refund the money. I told him I wanted to see if I could fix it. Other than planting corn, I don't have much else to do.

Yep, go ahead and try to fix it. Best way to get the experiance, and there lots of people here to help you if you hit a snag.

I myself am not so sure about ebay even being any good for parts anymore.

I'm dealing with some new recoil springs that were broken even though they were in there original packages.

I guess it's hard for the seller to belive they were that way even though there over 25 year old aftermarket springs.

After the first one arrived and I explained the situation to him and sent him a photo of it, he said "it looks like it was cut" but he sent me another anyway and it arrived rusty and broken just like the first one.

Soo, more pictures and emails to him stating that I'm done with these and would like my money back. Been 3 days now with no reply.

Hopefully he's just away from the computer for some reason and will return to make it right. Its not much money, just the point of it.

Oh and I thought I would buy from this guy on ebay because he's a member of this and other chainsaw forums, and seems respected.

We seem to get the same stupid remarks everytime someone gets burnt on an eBay purchase. YES, I's have a problem if I bought a saw and the crank was broken and it wasn't disclosed, especially if the guy knows chainsaws. What's up with this "what do you expect" attitude? I expect the seller to be honest. Is that too much to ask? There are always those here that love to kick a dog when it's down. And then others jump on the band wagon. Ignore them. They're the ones with a problem.

IMHO, you should take the refund. I speak from experience. You're much better off starting with a better saw. If you try to fix this thing up, you're likely to have more in it than it's work, especially with problems as serious as a broken crank. Good luck to you.
