it is time for rings in the old 028 super @ 90 psi (orginal purchaser) and was wonder if there are any worthwhile mods that should/could be done at the same time. mild port - widen exhaust port, base gasket? muffler was done and seals were replaced recently. thanks for your help and suggestions

Check your P/C clearance at the skirt. Should be ~0.002" new. If it's getting too big, time for a new piston too. I'm not sure where others toss a piston for excessive clearance.........slap slap slap.....

Can you still see the machine marks on the piston skirt?

no scoring, but can not see any machining lines - meteor time, what else?

If the piston is smooth, replace it. Deglaze the cylinder, reassemble, vacuum and pressure test, replace fuel and pulse hoses, and enjoy. Fingers crossed on the carburetor.

vacuum/pressure test for cylinder to case leak check? why fingers crossed for the carb? any port work worth the effort on the 028 super?

I'll suggest the above and change the seals, look over intake boot well, and put in a carb kit. Check the tank vent hose and replace if needed as it's only fuel line hose and inexpensive. When changing fuel line make sure the filter and screen is in good condition

While you have the clutch off look over the oil pump for any signs of leaks.

Edit: One more thing to check is the AV rubber buffers.

028 carbs have been discontinued and you have age of the unit against you. Any saw from the 80s needs to have the vacuum and pressure test verified.
Or just put it together and see what happens.

did the fuel & impulse lines along with the seals 2 years ago, oil pump was about 5 years ago. while the jug is off, worth doing anything with mild porting?
