Hi All,

I picked up a really nice 051AV from an AF member a while back. It was rebuilt with OEM parts before I bought it. My intention was to mill some smaller stuff with it - 24 inch or less. But, now I have a good and straight ash log that is 30 inches and begging to be ACM’d. Can the 051 handle a 36 inch bar with skip chain?

If not, I’ve got my eyes out for an 066/660/661 or a husky 394/395. Would these more modern saws be better suited for larger logs than the 051, even though the displacements are near identical to the 051? Even if I do get another saw, I’d probably hang onto the 051. It’s too pretty to sell.

Thanks

I don't think you'd have a problem with the 051. I'm running a 661 with a 36" and 50". Like you said, very close specs.

I would stay with the 051. Heat is the killer in milling, and the 051 runs a lower rpm than the 395. (7000-8000 versus 10000-11000).

The chain will be .404 pitch. Should I run a semi-skip, full skip, or full chisel chain on the 051 for an Alaskan mill setup with a 36-inch bar (absolute max wood width of 30 inch)?
