I am thinking about getting a Alaskan mill and my biggest saw its a j-red 2186, if i don't go bigger than about a 28"log is this saw big enough? I don't want to beat the s to death doing it. Mostly cherry, maple, And walnut

It will be slow in wood that wide. You'll need a 32" bar if not bigger to fit a 28" log. The oiler will be struggling milling to keep up. If you add an aux oiler and don't mind taking your time it will be fine for occasional stuff. I have a 385 and 390 and I use them for up to what a 24" bar will mill. After that the 088 is coming out.
