I am thinking about getting a Alaskan mill and my biggest saw its a j-red 2186, if i don't go bigger than about a 28"log is this saw big enough? I don't want to beat the s to death doing it. Mostly cherry, maple, And walnut

It will be slow in wood that wide. You'll need a 32" bar if not bigger to fit a 28" log. The oiler will be struggling milling to keep up. If you add an aux oiler and don't mind taking your time it will be fine for occasional stuff. I have a 385 and 390 and I use them for up to what a 24" bar will mill. After that the 088 is coming out.

I have a 28" bar, that would do a 22-24" log i think, would my saw do ok that?

Yes you'd be fine. If you take the spikes off you night get 24" out of the 28" bar.

Thanks, I'll have to order one and out. Would a different sprocket help with milling?
