24" Bar

I have a 20 and 28 inch bar for my 2186. The 20" is often not quite enough but the 28" is usually way too much unless I'm in something really big like the elm and maple I did last winter or the willows I did last fall.

For you guys with similar cc saws, what are your go to bar lengths? Considering picking up a 24" when I see a good deal.

24" is a really versatile bar length and is what the 7900 has on it most of the time. I have a couple reduced weight 28" bars, I should have just bought 32" instead, as I find 32" way more useful.

No saws left that big. Just a 83cc and 77cc. I use 20" rarely on that size and mostly 24" 32" myself.

I have 20" & 36" for my PS-7900, those are actual 18" & 34" when considering the 2" long US-style spikes.
The 20" is considerably shorter than what the PS-7900 is capable to pull, it also tends to be a inch or two too short.
The 36" is too big for most of my bucking.
That been said I am considering to get a 24" as a main bar for my PS-7900, which could double as a long bar for my PS-6400.

My PS-6400 is perfect with a 20" main bar!

Forgot to mention the 24" I run on a 562xp and it cuts like a hot knife through margarine... I was really surprised how well it cut through 30+" of oak.

My 385xp wears a 24" bar 100% of the time. That is 7 years of firewood cuttting. A half dozen times I could have used a longer bar more efficiently. Left Coast Supplies made it too reasonable to refuse a 32"GB bar and chain combo on sale for the 1% need.

I know someone would come by and say that… some things never change For me and what we cut that just means more reaching and bending. I know you could take that to the extreme but for me it just works. My first saw was a Jred with a 24” bar and although it was heavy and had slow chain speed it worked well. I have since had other saws both big and small with 14, 18, 20, 32 & 36 inch bars and after all that when I sat back and thought about it I went with my first love.

It runs good. I have had the 24 buried in oak, hickory, elm and even used it to drop a couple 44" cotton wood. Majority of my trees are sub 28" so I don't use it as much as I do the 20 but I can't tell any loss of performance between the 20 and 24

I have bars 16, 17, 18, 20, 24, 28, 30, 32, 36 that all fit the same saws. By far 20" is what I use the most. 24" next most. I don't change bars as much as I use different saws that have different length bars on them.

I'm actually different than you, I used to run a 24 on my 86 but found it not long enough the stuff I was cutting most of the time now all it wears is a 28" or 36" all the time. My 2159 and 2150&52 sees all my 18"-20" cutting use. Since I got my 2171 and 272 those have the 28's on and only use the 86 for the real big stuff unless I just want to run it. Those saws are way to heavy to cary around with just a 20 or 24 inch bar. All of my saws are ported of course

to me, anything smaller then a 28" on a 385/390 is kinda silly. i'd run the 28" on the 390 and have a 20"/24" for the 562, run a 16" on the 550. heck i run 36" on ported 372's and they pull it with authority. i've heard ported 372's pull a 32" full comp with authority even in hardwood.

Hey CoreyB how do you find the 6100 runs with the 24" ?

I have a guy running a 6100 with a 24" Cannon commercially. He really likes that combo. The Cannon small mount bars are only 81DL though so a tad shorter than standard 24" bars.


He likes that combo enough a few months ago he ordered a new 6100/cannon combo just to have a spare saw.

I'm actually different than you, I used to run a 24 on my 86 but found it not long enough the stuff I was cutting most of the time now all it wears is a 28" or 36" all the time. My 2159 and 2150&52 sees all my 18"-20" cutting use. Since I got my 2171 and 272 those have the 28's on and only use the 86 for the real big stuff unless I just want to run it. Those saws are way to heavy to cary around with just a 20 or 24 inch bar. All of my saws are ported of course
